check out this interesting read from the NY times about NBA players going back to school.
It's good because it's a "feel good" story (multi millionaires spending the summer in class rooms) but it also tackles an issue that is often overlooked and misunderstood.
According to this piece, 60% of NBA players end up broke within five years of out of the league. SIXTY PERCENT. These guys make millions a year. Even the worst...Read more

There's a scene in Inglorious Basterds when Bridget Von Hammerstein (Diane Kruger) asks Brad Pitt and the Basterds:
"I know this is a ridiculous question before I even ask...but do you Americans speak any other languages but English?"
The entire theater I watched the film in laughed out loud. I thought it was hilarious too.
Hilarious because it's so true.
I always got props back in high school for being able to speak, for the most part, native English and native Cantonese. Then I come to...Read more
I watched the Hong Kong Philharmonic in concert tonight. I can't say I'm a huge fan of classical music, but much like Jazz, I admire, respect, and do enjoy it when I come across it. (Speaking of Jazz and Classical music. Remember that episode of Fresh Prince when Uncle Phil had his family listen to classical music, and right when the climax hits, Jazz scratches the vinyl record, leading to UP throwing him out of the house? HAHAHAH that was rad. Damn US TV shows are great now and all but I miss Fresh Prince reruns)
Okay. As I wa...Read more

damn, so im writing my streetball in hk story for SCMP right now and for the first time ever, i have to write hoop in a way that can be read by casual readers or people who dont give a crap about basketball.
i mentioned Iverson in my piece and it's just weird to have to then explain who Iverson is.
usually, in forums or blogs, i just call him AI or Iverson. now it's "Allen Iverson, professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies franchise".
then i wanna write stuff like dropping 17 points but instead...Read more

The Truth
In the immortal words of Tyler Durden (Hobbes):
"how much do you really know about yourself if you've never been in a fight?"
I think the same applies to friendships.
Recently, I've had spats, disputes, and (Johnny) drama with cats whom I had considered some of my closer friends.
Of course, during the time of the drama and spats, I was annoyed, and/or even angered. But now that it's all been talked over/worked out and things are good again, I think there's a newfound admiration for the...Read more
