daily pick-me-ups

A friend told me that when he realizes he's sinking, he looks for something—anything, no matter how small—to cheer him up. And he focuses on it.

“Call it a daily pick-me-up,” he said. "You need to do that."

“Guy, it’s easier said then done,” I countered. “What, I’m just gonna have a ice cream and I’m gonna be in a better mood? This ain’t no movie, yo!”

Then he started quoting Jay Z on me. Well, actually he was quoting Jay Z quoting someone else.

“A wise man told me don’t argue with fools/cause f...Read more

Brain vs Heart

We've all been there: our brain tells us we should do one thing, but the heart won't allow it to. The brain argues that it's logic. But the heart counters that logic doesn't always feel right.

Well who says you gotta choose a side? We can all be like a Los Angeles "sports fan" and be flip floppers, front runners, and bandwagon asscats, right? (I love Rasheed Wallace for coining that term. From now until the end of time, everytime I meet a fake sports fan I'm gonna call him a "bandwagon asscat")Read more

Forgiveness and Peace of mind

I'm sitting here watching the Lakers/Magic game on Pearl right now and for the first time ever, I'm not rooting for Kobe to lose. Perhaps my lack of respect for the Magic has something to do with it, but I think it’s more because I've finally reached peace of mind with a player I've disliked heavily since 1998.

To be honest, alot of the hate was unjustified. I hated how he was voted as an all star starter in 98 when he wasn't even a top 50 or 60 player in the league. I hated how the homer Laker fans d...Read more

the decline of print media

The threat of the internet making newspapers and magazines obsolete is an idea that's been mentioned before, here and there. But it's a notion that has been generally dismissed because people claim they'd still rather hold the paper in their hands, to turn the pages and to be able to absorb the colors. This may be true in the days of crappy mobile internet, but with the rapidly improving technology: laptops are getting smaller and slimmer, mobile broadband internet is becoming more and more common, mobile phones are now...Read more

while my guitar gently weeps

Was looking for Weezer videos, somehow ended with a horrendous Weezer cover, kept going, found this guy.

Amazing.

Ain't gonna lie, I shred a tear.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQe5IgGRtfY

You know what's more amazing than this guy's guitar playing skills? It's the diverse selection of songs he's willing to cover--ranging from legendary pantheon artists (The Beatles, Zeppelin) to shitty artists lik...Read more

life in technicolor

if my 2004 self met Marty and Doc, he'd take the Delorean, take it up to 88, meet me in Wanchai, and kick the shit out of me in front of all the Thai hookers and drunk white guys.

And I'd pat him on the back for doing so.

2004 me wins.

Slumdog is so overrated

Alright, I'm sick of reading about Slumdog Millionaire's kids, their deadbeat parents, or whatever else ish happening to them in the news.

Why is it important? Not that I think their situation is a laughing matter, but why write about them? Because they starred in the movie? There are kids in China or Compton in just as bad shape, no? (DON'T BE A MENACE TO SOUTH CENTRAL WHILE DRINKING YOUR JUICE IN THE HOOD)

Slumdog Millionaire is so overrated it's getting annoying. I said it was overrated from the get ...Read more

like a rolling stone

Quite a stunning image on the front page of the SCMP today.

You know, we Hong Kongers should be damn proud of ourselves. No matter how bad the commies try to stop people from remembering, from knowing, we didn't let it get to us. Here, I'll just quote Xiong Yan, one of the former student protestors.

"Hong Kong is the pride of all Chinese--because you have people w...Read more

where were you 20 years ago today?

June 4th, 1989

I was too young to know the facts and details when it happened, but even then I knew it was a big deal. I remember television footage, I remember my parents talking about, I remember the black ink written on giant pieces of white paper scattered over this convenient store in Cheung Sa Wan (where I lived).

I was completely different back in 1989. I wasn't an American yet. Didn't really speak English, didn't know I was gonna move out of Hong Kong soon, but then most 8 year olds don&#...Read more
