There is a statistic about phones that shows, in the USA anyway, that if you don't use a feature on your mobile phone in the first three days, you probably never will. So many gadgets these days are loaded with more features than we really need or even pay attention too. Cameras are not exempt from this, especially those innocent looking point-and-shoots.
Case in point, Savvy has a Canon Ixus 750. Great little camera that, in all honesty, I use a lot more than she does. So the other night, we invited a few friends from AnD o...Read more
No trip to Shenzhen is complete without a jaunt across the border to Hong Kong. If I'm going to be honest though, Hong Kong would be a lonely place for me were it not for AliveNotDead.com. The truth is, everyone of my friends in HK is a result of AnD. Don't forget, I've never lived there. For me, it all began with Mark Moran, but it has morphed into a great circle of creative and dynamic friends that continues to grow every time I visit.
As a favor to Jesse Warren, I hopped on a plane and flew down to Shenzhen to shoot the 2009 China Surf Open. Jesse has probably done more than anyone to promote the sport of surfing in Shenzhen and he put in a ton of time and effort to organize the event. I went a few days early to catch up with friends and see about some possible exhibitions in the coming year. Everything was looking good until 24 hours prior to the competition. That's when the wave report made i...Read more
Though I was a bit nervous about this exhibition, everything went extremely well. During the opening, more than 60 people showed up and hundreds passed through during the weekends. Considering how tucked away the gallery is, and that it has no signage yet, I think that marks a success. The gallery is also quite small, so if too many people showed up at once, it was difficult for people to see the artwork. Here's a link to an Read more
We got all the images hung today and the gallery looks quite nice decked out in my photos, if I do say so myself. If you are anywhere near Beijing, please come anytime from 4-6PM on Saturday, 28 November at the Unit 1 Gallery in the 798 Art District of Beijing for the opening of Restrained, my solo photo exhibition. If you cannot make the opening, the show will be up through 6 December. That's 2009, in case you were wondering. Still need another reason to go? Complementary beverages. Now I have your attention.Read more
Well, it finally happened, just not quite how I expected it. Last week, a gallery owner and artist that I know called me and said, "So, you want to have a solo exhibition?" To which I replied, "Absolutely! When?" That's when he let me know I had a week to get it ready. So much to do already and so much still remains undone. Finally got the image selection and printing done. Thankfully, his assistant is taking care of all the mounting on aluminum. However, I still need to do a write up, get the mater...Read more
Last year, winter in Beijing punished the kid in me. Month after month of cold and wind without any white stuff to show for it. The one day it did snow, I was in India. So when it snowed in Beijing this month, I finally got to go out with my camera and grab some shots.
Although my intent was to go around Hohai, I quickly came to my senses and settled on the Temple of Heaven. So without any further gilding of the lily, here's the goods. Enjoy.

Even though our friends had to cancel at the last minute due to illness, even though two typhoons were baring down on the Philippines, even though our flights might get canceled, we felt bound and determined to attend the First Annual Alive Not Dead Boracay Beach Party. Okay, so I must have been dreaming about the AND bit, but we still went to Boracy anyway.Although I get to travel often...Read more
Though I almost missed his visit to Beijing, I managed to connect withCharlie Chiena couple of nights ago at Xiu Bar in Soho. Charlie was there to celebrate his producer's birthday. I could not stay for long, but was there long enough to take a few clicks.Read more
