Wimobilize McElrea Racing competed in round 4 of the GT3 Cup Challenge, Australia. The venue was the small but beautiful setting at Morgan Park Race Circuit, in Warwick, Queensland.
There was a lot of buzz and this race weekend, which included V8 Supercars, Formula 3, Porsche GT3 and SuperKarts.
Newly represented 15 year old Mitch Evans was present in his F3 car, as he is fresh on being represented by new agent and Formula 1 star, Mark Webber.
The Morgan Park Circuit originated from The Warwick District Sporting Car Club Inc, which was formed on 14th December, 1954 by a small group of Motorsport enthusiasts. This historic outfit ran its first major event with a hillclimb being run on the streets of Warwick. The circuit was subsequently built in 1968, with the first race meeting held on 14th of March, 1969.“The circuit was hard to understand for quite a while,” commented Tan. “During Friday practice, I was slower by a few tenths than my teammate which was not ideal. Took the whole day to understand the circuit. I was happy with the new circuit as well. Was fun and fast! Took a big spin there on Sunday morning too!”Yuey Tan, failed to match the pace of his new teammate in practice, Rob Knight. Though he stormed back in qualifying to qualify a solid 7th place. “Rob took a spin in practice, before qualifying. Shook him up a little bit but he got back to his best! He did a great job considering he’s only done several test sessions.”
Team boss McElrea was upbeat about his team performances. “We took a few spins. Had a shunt. But both cars made it to the end of all 3 races, and picked up good points. Rob bounced back great from his shunt in practice, and Yuey did good to fight back from 19th on the grid to finish 10th in race 3.
Singaporean Tan, reflected on the historic venue. “Like so many places we have raced at, in Australia, there is full of history here at Morgan Park. Bathurst was the famous hills of Mt Panorama. Symmons Plains was the land of the off season Formula 1 drivers in the 60’s and 70’s. Morgan Park is a club circuit, built and funded by enthusiasts. This is miraculous. People putting their life savings into having their own racing circuit. This is passion. Cool.”
