Driver – Yuey Tan: Singapore Motorsport should focus on SingaporeansSingaporean race car driver, Yuey Tan, believes that the nation needs to focus and get behind the local town heros.“I’ve seen Singapore import in players in sport in the recent past. Though in the case of motorsport, there’s one quick kid from England, and everyone starts to lose focus on the true blue Singaporeans that are racing around Asia. This can’t be the way. We cannot be so commercially minded that we pick whoever is best. This isn’t national competition anymore.”With Singapore getting involved in foreign imports to achieve success, Tan believes that it would be better if the talent was invested into, and local starts were developed over time.“We’ve seen it in Table Tennis and Soccer in recent times,” continued Tan. “Though now, there are some quick kids in the Formula BMW’s, and we have a homegrown Singaporean Indian driver, that doesn’t get the press he should be getting. And of course, there is myself but I have never been an inch closer from being supported in developing my career.”Motorsport is a sport that needs to grow organically, and without the foundation and basis for a nationwide obsession, anything less than maximum success for Singaporean motorsport, will be unfortunate.
