Here is a bit on how SkateFirst was put together….
In mid 2006, during an X-Fed meeting, we thought of ways to ‘promote’ X games & we came up with the idea of “how to” or “training” video by local skaters / riders.
The core idea was that each discipline (Skateboarding, BMX Freestyle & Aggressive Inline skates) would film each video in their own style to represent their ‘own’ vibe & feel - we wanted to make the videos as real a representation of what the scene is really like. Each video would teach 10-12 popular tricks or moves, & we thought it would be cool for people to watch & learn this way.
So for the Skateboarding video, Nigel was the man. His idea was to make the video “our own”; making use of old & new footage that documented the history of skateboarding in Hong Kong; a visual journey that gives this video its own identity, an identity that belongs to HK skateboarders, a video that captures the vibe & feel of HK skateboarding.
The music was also a very important component of the video. All the music are by local bands & artists. Conroy (24Herbs & X FED president) wanted to help promote the local indy music scene, he & Nigel hooked up artists like Ryan Hui, Audiotraffic, Chau Hung, etc.. so we all became a ‘big family’, helping each other out. This is one of the most meaningful things of this video.
After watching the full release of the video, I am honored & proud to be part of this ‘big family’ - I hope each & every one of you would feel the same way too!
Big thanks to all the people involved in this project, (all the skateboarders, artists, & friends) we all did this together!
“Hong Kong Pride!!”
