The first day of CNY is for the welcoming of the deities of the heavens and earth. According to custom and for good luck, I usually visit the Chinese Temple with my family on the 1st day of CNY. On that day, in order to honour GOD and be blessed by GOD, I have to queue in the morning sun, squeeze my way through the crowd and be smoke by the josssick !!!! YES, I hope GOD would be touched by my sincerity.
Many people, especially Buddhist abstain from meat consumption on the first day because it is believed that this will ensure longevity for them. Some consider lighting fires and using knives to be bad luck on New Year's Day, so all food to be consumed is cooked the day before. However my house doesn't follow this custom, my mummy still cooks fresh n yummy food everyday =)
Most importantly, the first day of Chinese New Year is a time when families visit the oldest and most senior members of their extended family, usually their parents, grandparents or great-parents. Members of the family who are married also give red packets containing cash to junior members of the family, mostly children and teenagers. Since my granny is staying at my house, so I just have to sit and wait for the red packets to COME to me hee hee hee I've collected my fair share of red packets, what about you ???
