About 3 years ago, when I had quitted my senior marketing position to pursue my dream of becoming a film director, I was invited to the premiere of “The Rice Rhapsody” (aka Hainan Chicken Rice) by Ms, Ivy Ling Po, the mother of the director Mr. Kenneth Bi. Since then I had made different excuses to learn from Kenneth by showing him the various different stories that I had written.
Thanks to the kindness of my Heavenly Dad, Mr. Kenneth Bi had kindly read all of my 4 different stories. He had also spent time to give me his honest and valuable feedbacks. He also went to the extent of recommending a list of movies that he thought were relevant for me to see which might be able to help me improve my work.
Regardless of whether I can really make it as a commercial feature film director one day or not, I have always told myself (and I've also told Kenneth the same thing) that I can die a happy woman any time simply because I have had the honor of having him read my stories and also the pleasure of listening to him telling me various beautiful stories, usually, in an open café in Quarry Bay…
I must say that I am so proud to have known Mr. Kenneth Bi. I consider him not just a good friend, but also my mentor and the best teacher in film making that I have...
Whenever I feel frustrated in the pursuit of making feature films, it gives me the drive to carrying on when I look at the 7 years that Ken had spent from conceiving “The Rice Rhapsody” until it was finally made and shown in cinemas and the fact that he had also spent around the same length of time from concept to realization in making the movie of “The Drummer”.
I think "The Drummer" is certainly a movie that not only entertains; it also makes me think.... and think deep about life….I am hoping and have faith that Ken will be the next "Ang Lee" from Asia one day!
