So, as some of you may know, I’ve been heavily immersed in Cantopop (Leslie Cheung, mostly) and whatever you want to call the music Anthony Wong does for the past year. This is partly what has been driving my desire to learn Cantonese. Believe me, to be foolish enough to decide to teach yourself Cantonese with no native speakers around and, more importantly, to stick with it for a year, requires some mighty strong motivation. If I didn’t love something dearly that requires learning that language, I seriously doubt I would be able to lea...Read more
Ono no Komachi (834?-?) and Izumi Shikibu (974?-1034?) are Japan’s two greatest female poets. Both lived during the brilliant Heian era and were renowned in their lifetime for their exquisite poetry. A few weeks ago, we had a rare event here in central North Carolina, we had significant enough snowfall that my place of business told us all to stay home for the day. We were all very lucky that we got to stay home that day and enjoy all of the festivities surrounding the Obama Inauguration, as well as time to spend with family relaxing and going out in the snow. I took a few pictures of my yard in the snow. I love snow, especially because it is such a rare treat in this part of the US.

look, my feet no longer touch the ground as I lift my eyes to those sentinels of heaven
you cannot escape the snow dragon undulating...Read more

Franny, a Leslie Cheung fan from Japan, has posted a report on the Red Mission Japan exhibition that honored Leslie Cheung's musical career. After looking at the photos of the exhibition, I want to go and listen again to some of Leslie's music.
Here is the link for the first of 5 blog reports.
