Q: Well, can you tell me which film inspires your work most?
A: It is not the work that inspires me but rather the lives in film that inspire me. So I can't really say a particular film.
Q: What do you think of commercial films?
A; What do I think of it? I think it is great. Cinema should have a variety of films. It is when a certain culture only watches certain type ofl films that is when there is a problem.
Q: Can you tell me the last commercial film you watched at the Cinema?
A: At The World's End
Q: That's very recent.
A: Yes, I go to the cinema whenever I can. I respect films that have a big budget as well. I think a lot people put in a lot of work into it. The picture that we see is different, different from the films that I like to make, but it is still good. There are films for different people, you can't expect children to watch my films. I think if you do, most of them will decide to commit suicide at a very early age (laughing). I despise people that only watch "Art Films". They think they know all, but yet they don't realize that they are actually really ignorant.
Q: Do you consider yourself and artist?
A: No
Q: From your films and things you write about, it seems you don't believe in love or romance. Why is it?
A: No, I believe in romance, just that I don't believe in love. There is a difference. You can be a romantic but yet not in love.
Q: Do you believe in marriage?
A: Yes, but I don't think marriage is for everyone.
Q: you?
A: At this moment, no... but who knows about the future. Like I said before, you can never be too certain.
Q: Which performance in film leaves a strong impression?
A: Takeshi Kanero in Fallen Angels, and Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert's Grape.
Q: If you could choose who you'd would most want to work with who would it be?
A: William Chang Suk Ping, Takeshi Kanero Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Edward Norton, there are many... A lot talented people in this field.
Q: Which city would you most like to film in?
A: Hong Kong
Q: Not anywhere else?
A: It is the city I know most of. I think I know of Hong Kong more than I know of Toronto. Plus I feel attached to the city.
Q: What do you think of directors/actors that are now getting the opportunity to work in Hollywood?
A: Good for them.
Q: You don't sound pleased. Why is that?
A: I am truthfully happy for them, but I don't see a point. If they are going to Hollywood to transform into a member of Hollywood as in the transforming their work into the Hollywood way, then what is the point. Many people disapoint me, after they have moved on to Hollywood.
Q: Like who?
A: Go see or think about it yourself. There is no point in discussing about this.
Q: What do you think about the future of film in Hong Kong, or better yet China?
A: I think has potential. Especially now that we have returned to China. I think Hong Kong people will have a better idea of what culture really is. It's not a bunch of SOHO people from overseas that go to art shows and hang out in LKF that think they know about art. It's about society touching each other in all different ways.
Q: Touching? That sounds a bit sexual.
A: It is if you think of it that way. No point in defending that statement. Cause a lot of people will think so as well.
Q: Do you think you are always right?
A; No, but I know I am always focused. No one is ever right in a ever-changing world.
Q: Does your personality or attitude ever offend anyone.
A; Often
Q; Does it bother you?
A: Nope, why should it? Other people's personality bother me too. We all bother one another in another way. If we are all uptight about it, then we are never going to get anything done. I don't believe in conflict. I believe in resolution.
Q: That kind of mentality can be very annoying.
A: What do you mean? The fact that I believe everything can be solved? Or the fact that I find everyone has issues?
Q: Well, just because the world is not perfect, doesn't mean the everyone has issues.
A: Well, let me ask you this. Do you have issues?
Q: Yes
A: Do you think I have issues?
Q: Probably
A: Than how can you be so sure that everyone else does not have issues?
Q: How do you feel when people criticize your films?
A: Happy
Q: Truthfully?
A: Yes, if they can really critcise my film, it means they've watched it. All I want is an audience for me to reach out to. I can't be concerned about whether or not they like it. I mean i want them to like it, and it hurts if they don't, but what can I do?
