Making Our Hospitals Safe from Disasters Help us make your hospital safe! South-East Asia faces some of the world’s worst natural disasters. Over the last decade more than half a million people have died in devastating tsunamis, floods, earthquakes and cyclones. Hospitals are lifelines in the aftermath of these disasters. Yet they are often destroyed or fail when most needed – when communities have been hardest hit. Governments in South-East Asia have committed to ensuring health facilities, old or new, are safe. This means that the structure is strong enough to withstand a disaster, that there are contingency plans in place and that staff is trained to respond to emergencies.
