I received a phone call from one of my best friends who said that Fearless received an award for Best Actor. I thought my friend was joking! I am a very rational person. In 27 years of filmmaking I have always made commercial films, never thinking about receiving awards.
I thought differently when I was little. When I competed in wushu my goal was to be the champion. I was the wushu champion 5 years in a row and after that I went on to make movies. But since I've started making movies I’ve never thought about winning awards -- I just want to make good films and hope that they can be successful at the box office.
But for Fearless, I made this movie from my heart. It is a very personal story. I wanted to use this film to express everything I’ve learned in my life about wushu. Through the great master Huo Yuan Jia, I wanted to use his story to tell people how I felt about wushu. I also wanted to make this film a turning point in my career because I felt that up to this point my entire movie career has been dedicated toward the promotion of martial arts and wushu. After Fearless I hope that promoting wushu will not be the singular point of my movies.
I want to express my thanks to the Hong Kong Film Critics Society; they understood my heart as well. I really used my heart to tell this story and didn't focus on the craft of acting -- I just told a story from the heart. Every line of dialogue, every aspect of the story, every scene -- I approached it with heart. I used my heart to write it and used my heart to say what I feel about wushu.
Actually, this award does not bring me any particular happiness, but I am very grateful to my friends in Hong Kong. In all honesty I can say that at least 80% of my filmmaking knowledge comes from Hong Kong. Hong Kong has so many great movie making legends, directors, action choreographers, etc. They’ve all taught me a lot and for this I want to thank them.
