We were invited by a local chinese secondary school to build a Reptile House for educational use.
We made good use of the given limited room and budget to establish naturally decorated environment in the Reptile House for over 30 not-so-common animals of different kinds, including insects, spiders, arachnids, salamanders, frogs, toads, turtles, tortoises, lizards, and of course snakes.
Students will be benefited and able to learn lively from it regarding biology, ecology, and conservation of wild animals. Students can also gain hands-on experience handling these animals and learn skills and responsibility taking care of them through fun.
Everything started off from a disused greenhouse located next to the school's garden and playground.
The greenhouse had not been used for a while and turned into a store room. The floor was uneven so it had to be changed.
When there is sunlight over the top the exhaust fan plays a very important role to ventilate the entire house and to avoid over heating.
Our carpenter set up shelves with stainless steel angle bars and wood boards with white top.
UV lamps and water dishes specially for reptiles. There are many accessories else such as timers, basking lamps, heat pads, heat rocks, hidding caves, water fall systems, filters, misting systems, etc
Professional sand for desert animals. All lizards will probably eat some sand every time when they prey on an insect. This sand is specially made for reptiles which will not harm the reptiles if being eaten. Other sand can cause impaction in the lizard's guts which can be fatal.
Vivariums testing for temperatures and humidity levels, also the coordination of live plants inside.
Vivarium with setting of temperate deciduous forest.
Tropical Rain Forest vivarium.
In Reptile House, vivariums are naturally set resembling the species' natural habitats. Reptiles are able to hide themselves into their environment easily for camouflage.
This is one of a few herbivore in the Reptile House - Indian star tortoise.
California banded king snake. Chosen snakes for the school are all non-venomous and of a non-aggressive nature. All of them can be fed on frozen mice which makes maintenance easy.
In Reptile House, there are mainly reptiles but we also have amphibians like this Warty newt. Newts play a significant role in the evolution of animals which make excellent teaching material.
The Argentine horned frog is a burrower living in the base of tropical rain forests. It remains not moving most of the time waiting for its prey to come close to its large mouth.
The Royal python is native in western Africa which grow to only 3-5 feet when adult.
Some species can be housed in a group like these Oriental fire-bellied toads. Social behavīors make valued study.
The Chilean rose tarantula is a large, hairy spider usually being slower and calmer than other tarantulas.
