As writer you have to read a lot. I mean a lot - 100's over books over the years from the classics to modern story tellers like Stephen King. In amongst all this reading is knowledge leading to the late night study of text books on just about everything, although dominated by psychology. I started to write when I left the army and started my married life at the age of 21.
