In 2007, Francis Ford Coppola, one of my all-time favorite filmmakers, returned to the director's chair for the first time in ten years with his adaptation of Mircea Eliade's novella, "Youth Without Youth." The film was a personal one for Coppola, who saw it as a meditation on time and consciousness, two themes he's explored before in his incredible body of work.
Interestingly, Coppola shot the film on a Sony HDC-F900 in High Definition and edited it on Final Cut Pro. And, although the critical reception was mixed, comparisons were made to the works of two other master filmmakers, Federico Fellini and David Lynch, and the film generated enough profits to finance Coppola's next personal film, the upcoming "Tetro."
Rather than try to explain to you what "Tetro" is about, I thought I'd let the master speak for himself. Here is Francis Ford Coppola on "Tetro" --
