Wolverine

Lun Wong told me he expected a blog from me after the Wolverine screening so here goes:

On second thought, I'm not gonna write a full blog because I am gonna blog about the uncanny Celtics/Bulls series soon...I'll just do Wolverine cliff notes style.

The Good:

-The one thing the filmmakers got right is they gave the geeks what we wanted from Wolverine in the first hour or so: Wolverine going berserk (right at the beginning actually... and as a kid no less), Wolverine saying his signature line "I'm the best there is at what I do", and Wolverine calling someone bub. Bryan Singer had the entire length of X-Men to deliver those three things and failed.

-Patrick Stewart's cameo was pretty rad.

-The Wolverine/Deadpool match was pretty well done.

The Bad:

-The entire movie is structured like this: "Logan is mad, Logan goes to Mutant A and ask for information. Mutant A leads him to Mutant B. Logan goes to Mutant B for information. Mutant B leads to Mutant C". People like the Blob and Gambit felt tacked on...but I gotta admit I did enjoy Gambit.

-I was surprised that Ryan Reynolds, aka THE LUCKIEST MAN ALIVE, had so little screentime. I was expecting Deadpool to be a major player, and I was definitely hoping he was going to break the fourth wall....but nope... we got the waterdowned Deadpool like we got the watered down Venom. But Reynolds probably didn't mind, because the sooner he wraps shooting the sooner he goes home to his wife. THE LUCKIEST MAN ALIVE I TELL YOU.

The Ugly:

-How the hell did Stryker get a camera up where Wolvie and Deadpool were fighting? Compared to the amazingly well done "mutant rescue/Stryker battle at his base" from X2, the same mutant rescue/Stryker battle was kinda weaksauce.

-Will I. Am. in any comic book movie should not be legal. Tom Cassidy and I are shaking our heads at the possibiltiy of him appearing on the cover of Beats next month.

All in all, Wolverine gets a 7.5 out of 10 on the bennymeter.

Here's how I would rate other previous comic movies for reference and perspective purposes...

X1: 8 out of 10

X2: 9.5 out of 10

X3: 8 out of 10

Spiderman: 9 out 10

Spiderman 2: 7.5 out of 10

Spiderman 3: 7.5 out of 10

Superman Returns: 8 out of 10

Iron Man: 9.5 out of 10

Daredevil: 5 out of 10

Ghost Rider: 2 out of 10

Fantastic Four: 3 out of 10

Watchmen: 7.5 out of 10 if you've read the book and 3 out of 10 if you haven't.

Tim Burton's Batman: 9 out of 10

Batman Forever (the one with Val Kilmer's weak ass): 0 out of 10

Batman and Robin (the one with Clooney): 4 out of 10 (4 points alone for Ah-nold's one liners)

Batman Begins: 8 out of 10

The Dark Knight: 15 out of 10

Tomorrow I'm watching Zac Efron's 17 Again. If I somehow rank that above Wolverine, you are welcome to come look for me and slap me. I can be found in Central/SoHo Monday to Fridays and in the playground of West Philly, chilling and maxing relaxing all cool on the weekends.

I am looking forward to seeing Chandler again though.

And Celtics/Bulls better go seven games. We deserve it after putting up with all the shitty Eastern Conference Playoff games the last few years. Spike Lee and Denzel are right--Jesus Shuttleworth Got Game.
