1000 True Fans

Kevin Kelly wrote an article about how creative artists can build enough of a fan base in order to support themselves and their craft.

His basic premise is that while most everyone dreams of having millions of fans.  If you remove a lot of the structure from in between the artist and their fans - an artist really only needs 1000 True Fans.  He defines "True Fans" as fans who can't wait to go to their next show or buy their next CD, who would buy a t-shirt or hat from the artist.  He admits a video maker might need more than a musician, but he is basically trying to present a tangible goal for artists who rely on having a fan-base.  This is particularily notable for musicians.

I'd encourage anyone who has to think about turning creative work into income for themselves or their clients to read the article in full.

Originally I saw the article linked at cinematech.blogspot.com - one of the only blogs I read semi-regularily.

ZJ, how do you define "rational fan" - what does that mean to you?

zj - you're making some good points. I always think a "True Friend" is someone who thinks of their friend's good will from a lifetime perspective and therefore not be afraid to be supportively critical. But from a mass perspective... I think you're right that KK is looking at things from purely a business perspective and he is thinking of the True Fans as a source of income that supports the work and the artist. I think a lot of times, there is this feeling of shame about artist making money for their work - but I think it takes full time dedication to reach a level of mastery - and how else will that be paid for? If people don't support the artists they love, then all they'll ever get is commercials for products and franchises. While I think an artist needs to be open to growing and criticism, this isn't in conflict with the idea of finding dedicated fans who support them wildly. I think David Lynch at the start of his career is a great example os someone who was making something that was so different than the majority of the world might have said "this doesn't feel like a movie!" - but if he thought "Oh then I should change." His unique voice would never have been heard. What worked was that he reached a core groups (thousands of fans) who were excited to finally have something different and could not wait until his next film - and the love the first one so much, they wanted the poster, the book about it, etc etc. And so, another film was made.
