Last Wednesday, the editorial team and I headed down to Tsim Sha Tsui to interview Jackie Chan.
Now normally I don't get star-struck by celebrities- My father always says they're just normal people, which they are and unless they aren't Comicbook or Blink 182 related I'm fine.
I'm not even a huge fan, but I have to say... man this was Jackie Chan. I was proper excited. It took a good fifteen minutes before I was relaxed with the situation, then I was thrown into it again when we had to get in gear for photo shooting and time reminding during the interview, then again at the end where he posed for and with us.
Beats were the only media that were white. All other press was Chinese. The interview was mainly to promote his new movie 'Shinjuku Incident'; a dark and violent portrayal of the oppressed chinese immigrants in Japan. It is also the first film where Jackie Chan does not use martial arts, and apparently, it's not a bad film.
My editor, Scott Murphy was on it. I have never seen The Murph as on the ball as he was in this interview and he did good. The interview itself was pretty insightful. Chan talked about how he wished the British still governed Hong Kong, what he would do if he were in control of the country and how the whole Edison Chen fiasco was just 'shit'. Yes, he was quite profound and even though he played the part of the entertainer, I could actually sense sincerity when he was talking to The Murph. The Beats crew also agreed that Chan was somewhat relieved to be talking to us, as the Hong Kong media ask the same old questions and were often asking on his thoughts about the Edison Chen, - something he made clear to us he clearly did not want to discuss.
After being rushed through a quick photo shoot outside the lounge and flirting with my friend Harmony, he was gone. To men sitting outside who had got a photo with him later asked me who he was.
'We are from holland, so.. we don't know about the Hong Kong stars'.
Moving on...
So that was it. We celebrated a successful interview in a cheap and cheerful bar in TST.
A special thankyou to my friend Harmony Pang, an amazing photographer, who did the shoot for free.
Also a shout out to my boys Scott, Ben and Cassidy, for agreeing that Cass looks like Toby Maguire.
I'm really looking forward to reading my editors write-up on the interview which will be available to all of you next week FOR FREE!! I'll be working on the layout as soon as I finished posting this blog...
And here are some pictures. I chose the ones where I looked gayest, just to emphasise how star-struck I really was.I actually completed some artwork for the issue... hopefully cover material... but these are some of the samples I have created, a 'slight' Obama/Fairey influence here. I had a great time creating them... under some guide by my editors they wanted me to add the Hong Kong bauhimia into it somehow... but I prefer without.I hope this will be the images you see hitting the streets next week.
'Till next time true believers!!
PEACE.
