The Verve of Light and Shadow: Master Photographers Tchan Fou-li, Kan Hing-fook, Leo K.K. Wong"Thematic Galleries (1) & (2)

29 March 2009 - 26 October 2009"A Salute to Masters" Programme Series"Hong Kong Photography Series" Exhibition IEmphasising the artistic quality of the photograph over the subject matter, pictorialism was a mainstream movement in the development of photography in Hong Kong from the 1950s to 1980s. Influenced by Western photographic art, local pictorialists looked to create painterly effects to express a fine art sensitivity; at the same time, nurtured in deep-rooted Chinese culture, they blended Eastern elements into their works. The result was a unique photographic aesthetic. Active since the heyday of pictorialism, Tchan Fou-li, Kan Hing-fook and Leo K.K. Wong are three pivotal figures in this movement who have produced outstanding achievements in photographic art and garnered acclaim both in China and overseas.

The first exhibition of the "Hong Kong Photography Series" is both a tribute to this trio and a retrospective on their lifelong artistic achievements. By providing a comprehensive account of their interpretations of aesthetics as well as of their artistic ranges, the exhibition also aims to explore the relationship between photography and art and in the process reflect their spirit of innovation and perseverance.ADDRESS: Hong Kong Heritage Museum, 1 Man Lam Rd, Sha Tin District, Hong KongIt's Easter Holiday (at least son's out from school). As soon as I knew about this exhibition, I had to go.  Unfortunately I was busy last week. Anyway, went to the musuem for the first time (my wife and son's third).  Such an amazing and major photographic exhibition in Hong Kong.  Everyone must try to go and see as there is not really much excuses as this show goes on for SEVEN months.  So much more of a contrast to Chow Yun Fat and Dr Leo Wong's last photographic exhibition which can only last for 10 days at the CENTRAL LIBRARY at CWB - shameful (even though it does not charge a PENNY for entrance).  This one really does justice to Dr Leo Wong's work and two other major photographers in Hong Kong. The calibre of the work, presentation and passion / energy that gone into these three masters' works are truly unbelievable spanning over several decade.  And they are still alive and taking photographs at their grand old age which in itself a celebration of life and art - I salute.A show definitely worth more than just ONE visit.  EXTREMELY TRULY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to such a beautiful show.
