This was one of my culinary highlights during my visit to Seoul, so I have to share this with you all.
Not far from the National Palace Museum of Korea, in Gyeongbokgung, there was this place that’s been around forever & its specialty was SAMGYETANG . This place serves nothing but Samgyetang, this place is mad respected for their own OG special secret recipe for the Samgyetang.
Samgyetang literally means “ginseng chicken soup.” It is basically a whole young chicken stuffed with glutinous rice and boiled in a broth of Korean ginseng, garlic, ginger, chestnut, & a bunch of other medicinal herbs that is supposed to be really, really, really good for you.
This bowl arrived with the soup still boiling! They served this with insamju (ginseng wine), which was nice.
Anyway, the whole chicken & with all the un cut ingredients including a whole ginseng root was in this soup, apparently to preserve the maximum amount of nutrients.
This was “the bomb” - it was so good.
Alan & David were enjoying this….
… I enjoyed it so much that I ate everything, even the ginseng root, I almost ate the bones!
I don’t know if I was just imagining it, but after our meal, we felt good. We walked for miles later on but still felt ‘good’ - probably a placebo effect after eating such a healthy meal, but definately something I will have again on my next visit to Korea. Highly recommended!!!!!
