Review: This is THE most ambitious movie on heroism in history, period. The scrīpt has the characters scrutinizied and developed so meticulously, that the outcome is so refined yet complex, its surreal to apprehend the entire story is based on fictional comic. Actually this movie has got me to recognise the fact that we are the generation for heroism, we have superman, batman, spiderman, x-man, hulk, fantastic four, iron man, man in black, star wars, transformers, pirates of carribean, indiana jones, mummy, harry porter, sex in the city (heroines for materialism), hancock (new generation hero) etc etc, which all have multi million budget to spend, in order to stand out, they have to rethink what heroism is all about. This movie has certainly transcended the concept of heroism to another level, almost too serious, or grim to some.
Its a long time since i have witnessed such inspiring, realistic performances based on fictional characters; impressed by ledger especially, my feelings are most profoundly mixed with hopes and regrets, for hoping him to be the second posthumous academy award winner since 1976. Bale, Gyllenhaal and Eckhart really made a solid triangle, out of all the dismay and controversies, based on their characters principles and believes, even though they have chosen a different path, their feelings remained deeply interlock. As for the villians, the Joker represents improvised chaos, no reason, no schemes, just pure evil, willingly take pleasure to the downfall of humanity. Two Face has only one goal- revenge, and a tragic avenger he becomes. Gordon the commissioner is one of the few positvie figure, though his believes are constantly challenged by the violent crime conidition of gotham. Other supporting roles like caine, freeman and roberts, all equally convincing and mesmerising.
This is how i see fictional heroism movies, whether u like them or not, they are inevitable, not only they generate billions of dollars only astrologists can apprehend, but bcos we love them. We want to see heros, we want to be protected on one hand, and we want to protect others on the other; may be we feel endangered, may be its the ongoing war and terrorism, u know, metropolitan psyche stuff. At the same time, we are the kids who read those 'dreamie' comics and got told off by adults, to stop imagining things, now that we are grown up and get to choose our own movie channels, our imagination should go over the limits, and why shouldnt it? Further more, lets make the heros real. In this movie u ll see, batman can be real. I have always considered myself very depressed, or grim in simple words. In fact i consider Two Face to be my spitting image(or the other way round), however moody or irresponsible he is. Interesting thing though, knowing my personality, my friend actually suggested seriously, that i should turn down such a role if opportunity arise, or i may commit suicide... o well, i was hoping to be a villian some day ^^;
Back to the review, having watched the Hulk, Wanted, Red Cliff and Hancock recently, i have to say, even with all four combined, dark knight's intensity remains superior, which is all action movies are all about. If u like elaborate explosions, this is it; if u like car chase and fast toys, this is your choice. And beyond action, there is plot, and then inspiration. Here is when scrīpt writing comes into play, and so it did brilliantly. While Spidie is preaching that in life we all have a choice, Battie is saying there are only two choices, either u die a hero or live long enough to turn evil. What's your choice?
