Our filming crew has picked shangri-la, yun nan, as our first location. I happened to have a week of vacation there three years ago, and had a great time capturing the scenary. However, the on going expansion for tourism and reconstruction of the dam got me worried about the rivers and natural habitat. I guess the images below proved i was thinking too much. But even though the sun and scenary is great, it is tough to film there, given the extreme temperature; it is close to zero without sun, and close to 20 degrees celcius with. The air is also pretty low on oxygen, since we were constantly at 3200-3700m above sea level, we always had a can of O2 just in case. It is also extremely dry, the back of my sculp was peeling so bad i lost my appetite for a couple days. You can imagine the filming condition: its showering with snow in the morning, over sun-burnt at noon, and pouring down ice dusk till dawn. On top of that, our hotel has time limits for hot water supply, and most of the time its just plain rusty. Ironically though, it is wat the story Journey to the West is all about, nothing great comes easy i guess. Anyways, glad you folks enjoy the photos.
The character i m portraying- monk xuan zang, comes from the legendary novel journey to the west, based on a true story. This man basically travels all the way to india from china, mostly by himself, to apprehend the roots of buddhsim, back in the early 7th century.
A typical Xi Zang citizen, most of them curious with the filming operation.
The journey of the west consists has many characters, mostly mythical creatures. There are four protagonists through out the story, the monkey king, the pig, the sand demon, and me- monk xuan zang, riding on a white horse (transformed from a white dragon).
the tranquil sea of Na-Pa
this sort of rock pile is all over the place, there is a saying if u walk around it three times in the same direction and pray, good fortune will embrace
our sand demon, sha wu jing, along with the monkey and the pig, is one of the three helpers for the quest to the west; standing 185 cm tall, and apparently a few kilos heavier than me :P
mountains surrounding sea na-pa, beautiful sun
dry hay rack, common on the fields of shangri-la
tree standing by itself, surreal, couldnt resist capturing
