DOES RACISM EXIST?

Of course, the answer is obviously, 'YES."  But being in LA for the past couple of days has got me thinking.

Living in Hong Kong for the past 9 months has made me forget about racism a little.  I'm sure there is a more eloquent or poetic way to say it, but damn it, I'm just not that eloquent or poetic.

Recently, my friend KOJI wrote a post about a recent racism experience.

He is a writer and he was talking to an agent who was really interested in representing his work.  The conversation was going great, until the guy starting going racist with his share of ching chongs and stuff.  Kojii didn't know what to do and just played along, feeling like a coward afterwards for not giving the dude a tongue lashing right then and there.  He ends with the question, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?  (You can read the entire blog here).

What would we have done, indeed.   I, too, would have most likely played it off and laughed with him...

"HAHA, those stupid Chinese.  HAHA.  Yeah.  Ching Chong Ching Chong....yeah."

I said this in another recent post, but we are just bred not to make trouble, even though it is wrong, and then we hold it in and let it bother us, while the other guy's thinking that he's done nothing wrong.  It just makes me sick that  Asian Americans have to deal with all this bullshit.  What REALLY pisses me off is that people can be so blatant about it to our faces.  I rather you be a bigot and a racist in your own time and do it behind my back, seriously.  But the fact that you can do it in my face, in front of me, and think that there will be no repercussions, now that is just some bullshit.

(sidenote:  I grew up with that "anger" and when push came to shove, it definitely ended up with me doing some pushing and shoving....but one time, it ended me getting beat down by 6 other guys...that's a post for another time though)

But here's another situation for you guys to ponder.  A group of us are at a house party.  White folks.  Black folks.  Yellow folks.  My friends (all Asian) and I are all talking in the corner when a white dude (my friends "friend") looks over and shouts, "Hey, what is that, the Asian corner?"

Everyone laughs.

My initial instinct was, that's racism and someone is going to get a pounding.  But then my buddy's perspective was this:

"those white guys make that statement because they don't perceive us Asian Americans from being any different from them, so they make jokes out loud and in our faces...because they see us as one of them.  If THEY don't perceive the difference then why should we?" I know what I think, but my question to you is, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?

totally hear you bro ... have dealt with alot of it even inhongkong , i guess whenyouare diffrent race in another country besides yours, youwill definitley experience it.. ijust look at those ppl whodo those kind of insults or making fun to be verylack of education ,morales and no sense of humanity ... those are the ppl who will always be the ones behind as they dont see the world as one . but speakingof speaking up when youcome across , i did thatin 2001 on hk's radio station when the host added an accentto my way of speaking chinese ... butbest part is whenispeak cantonese i speak totally hard core canto ... n he still tried to make fun... so i told him off on air youdont have toput an accenttotalk tome ... just be yourself .. bcs i find it very insulting and he apologized onair .... one shouldbe told but sometimes it can come from someone who you would rather just avoid so yeah there are times you should speak up n there are times n circumstances when you should just laugh it off but never join them, bcs then you just sold your soul ... its a diffrence when ignoring and when joining them .

oh man yeah if they were hommies of mine then its all fun and jokes. back in the heights our group of friends are all latinos and asians. so we joke with eachother all the time. but on the otherhand when its a stranger saying somthing like that. "depending on the intensity of things in the party... give a fewdrinks or two" things would have gone down. but ive been quite blunt with ppl some times when they pull that ching chang chong shit. a model in bangkok who i just met at the club. we seemed to be getting along fine just talking he was from brazil. and for all he knew i was american. then he starts talking about chinese ppl and i told him straight up , dude... are you serious? and he looked at me like "what did i say?" and that says it all... i noticed quite a bit of ppl posting blogs about this issue now. remember justice had one of the earlier ones

It seems to be human nature to separate the world into "us" and "them". There are plenty of places in the world where everybody is the same race, speaks the same language and looks basically the same. So what do those people use to separate out the "other"? It can be religion, tribe, family, or regional accent. The genocide in Rwanda is a case in point. This idea to create "us" and "them" seems to be hardwired into human-beings. It is always going to be there, so it is always going to be something that we are going to have to struggle with. Look at the issues women have historically had to deal with and how little equality there is for them around the world, and how many societies buttress these inequalities with religious and social traditon, as if that makes everything all right. At various times in my life I've been the "honky" so I do have a sense of how this works. (My high school was 80% Black and then I moved to Southside Chicago.) Real malicious racism has a different tang to it than just BS racism. BS racism is more of a bad reflex habit. Malicious racism is dangerous. Neither kind should exist in an enlightened society. If there was any racism behind the remark about the "Asian Corner", I would put it in the category of BS racism. What is required there is gentle but firm education of the knuckleheads involved. Malicious racism is what gets people killed and should always be outed, though perhaps not one-on-one if the idiot is violent in addition to be a cretan.

Great feedback from everyone! there were a lot of good points brought up...to me, it was just an eye opener that living in HK...I forgot a little bit that racism even existed. But coming back to the States and right away, BAM, it was in my face. Thanks you guys for taking the time to voice your opinions. It truly means that we are ALIVE not DEAD.... was that cheesy? :p

Spelmandiva--I am appalled that, by your definition of racism, a "person of color" cannot be a racist. What planet are you living on? In all your extensive academic reading have you never encountered the term "reverse racism"?
