(A bottoms-up view of my shoot with Men’s Health Malaysia May 2009)
I’m contemplating my time outside of my comfort KL with a few notes about this city. If you’re a Malaysian residing in HK, perhaps you’ll agree with me on these items:
Bring SUPER comfy shoes - my legs ache, even though the mid-level escalators help, I still walk everywhere. I missed walking, but not this much! 1 point KL
Don’t expect to find a local nasi lemak/mamak around the corner to sell food to you at wee hours of the morn. (I MISS FOOD IN MALAYSIA!) 1 point KL
Hong Kong productions offer a variety of food in styrofoam boxes: today I picked chicken fried rice. There was Shanghai noodle, Hainanese chicken rice, Curry fish n veggies. 1 point HK
Taxi cabs in HK will never cheat your money…but they’ll give you their two cents worth! 1 point HK
Don’t try to haggle with the cheap stall vendors, not everything is a bargain. 1 point KL
It’s not as walk-in friendly when getting into clubs, but at least it weeds out a good crowd. 1 point HK
I get to see my high school buddies and meet my fellow jook-sings located in this region. 1 point HK
People are quite pretentious out here, i stick to the no-label clause so I won’t stick out like a sore thumb. 1 point KL
Score: HK: 4 points vs. KL 4 points
Obviously I appreciate both cities equally. I’m glad that I came out here and checked out HK properly. I’m very very lucky to have amazing friends always leading me from one opportunity to the next. I’m back in KL and first thing i’m gonna do is go to my neighbourhood nasi lemak stall and just chew on the damn ikan bilis. Then again, nothing tastes better than making dreams happen!
