OK… so I have a major backlog of pictures I have yet to post up but I figure I might as well share the inspiring moments I’ve encountered in this past week.
First, I had a fantastic meeting with Andrew, Creative Director from GenesisCulture about these awesome “Sarah Lian-inspired” T-shirts that his designers are working on. I’ve always wanted a cartoon-like image of myself but to have a series of T-shirts in my likeness is definitely awesome. Genesis Culture is a collective of Malaysian-based designers that range from illustrators, graphic designers animators and even greeting card designers (does that exist). I’m sure the list goes on and I’m sure I’m missing out a few more of their talent pool genres.
The great thing about this grassroots collective is that it’s the first of its kind in Malaysia. They had a phenomenal debut at Youth ‘09 and later on at KL Design Week in CapSquare earlier this month. I am definitely excited to share with you that there is more to come with these guys and I am gladly willing to talk about their future events! It’s a brilliant idea and coming back from HK and seeing G.O.D plus Delay No Mall only means tongue-in-cheek communities like these are slowly becoming the new wave of trends. Check out their website, and stay tuned for the SARAH LIAN T-SHIRTS! (You fuckers better buy some and represent!) www.genesisculture.com
Secondly, I gravitate towards the spheres of Peters. (Thankfully, they’re not dateable!) My father is a Peter, who I skype with now that he’s sorted out his little snowball webcam. Good Luck to my pops who’s doing some super crazy marking with the term ending. My fellow imagineer Peter, always motivates me and helps steer me in the right direction. I was finally able to catch up with him over lunch for our usual “i push u, u push me” talks. My buddy Peter, might have possibly saved me from a harrassment of mat-motos after my loooong bus ride from Singapore. He never ceases to remind me that I should just tell people to go fuck themselvs, once in a while…hahahah!!! These 3 Peters always have terrific ideas and encourage me to seek out my dreams while having lots of fun. My career is not complete without these three Petes!
Thirdly, my network is starting to grow and I’m very insistent on establishing myself regionally in South East Asseeeaa. I had a fabulous time in HK and being able to do screen tests, test shoots, pilot shoots, commercial shoots and even coffee-table shoots mean that I had a very fulfilling trip! The people I’ve met along the way have been incredibly supportive and helpful with enlarging my scope of this industry. Singapore has been just that. I have the team from Fly Entertainment sending me out to castings and auditions and callbacks and meetings….the list goes on. I’m back in KL for a few things I have to sort out and I’ll be down south for more exciting work.
Last but not at all least, F-A-M-I-L-Y. BIG BIG UPS to my cousins MY and TW in Singapore and Hong Kong respectively who have been so helpful to me and my cause. I thank you guys so much! I joined the family’s monthly dinners at my house this past Saturday and it was so great to see them all! (Even if they always talk about the same stuff, its always so encouraging to be around them!) I got to spend time with my lil cousin SA and talk about my littlest but now very studly cousin JK. I’ve gotten her to give Juvanex a try as I’ll be going for my second detox to keep my system in check! From all the freebies, I’ve gotten from events, I’ve trickled them down to the cousins and aunties who can probably benefit from all the little vouchers I get in my goodie bags. I wish I could take full advantage of them but I know it’s better not to shop especially when I should be conservative with my budgets from all the travelling.
I’m trying to email my mom a little more often as I know she’s very worried about me. For the past 6 years, she’s probably seen me at most, 10x. As I think about it, I can’t wait to go back to Vancouver and spend some time with her. I love her so much and I think its most difficult for me to show her how much I care at times, without being so defensive about my career and my aspirations. I forget how it looks from her side, with a daughter caught up in all this and very limited contact. (I’m trying to make an effort!!!!) Also, my sister is expecting her second baby, so lamb-lamb is gonna have a baby to play with now! My brudder Nelly belly is finally graduating and will be off to TW in September. My baby bro has been doing a great job with his webby: Asian Rap Worldwide and getting some serious content about Asian rappers all around the world! PROPs!
I feel like a little Zombie rolling in from one “home” to another but now I’m back in my room reflecting about how I’ve been just in and out of cities in such a short period of time: 很多地方,没有很多时间. The moment I walked in the door, I felt like I was home. Malaysia is my home, no doubt and I find myself more and more Malaysian as the months have rolled by. I can handle spicier sambal, I make comments in Malay and when I’m elsewhere, I just sometimes wish I was in KL.
I need to sleep - have to wake up early to do my hair/makeup and my interview. Just wanted to share a moment.
