Firstly, People tend to get confussed with the term SONG WRITER.
Song writer = writing songs for the artist out there
Singer-songwriter = you sing the songs that you wrote yourself (and u don't really have to write songs for the artrist out there)
As i've mentioned before, my main duty includes 'taking care of' writers, but where do the writers come from??? a lot of the youngster are from:
Song writing competitions and talent shows etc.
Current writers friends or classmates or.....etc...
Those who somehow have my phone number or my email and started sending me demos.
What do we creatives (or music publishers) look for? PASSION!!!
No passion = no good music! TRUST ME
Due to the market (and my job), I have to say, i look for youngster that are capable of providing songs that are suitable for the current/near future market, to the end, Music Business IS a business... sorry...
Songs for 'business' = below 5mins, simple verse, clear structure and a VERY VERY STRONG HOOKLINE. the rest are up to the singer.
But the songs need to have character, there is no point if u can write a song that sounds AS GOOD AS who and who, otherwise, why would they ask YOU for a song? This is probably the hardest thing to achieve, the SOUND of a musician, you need to develop your own SOUND.
When it comes to song writing (for others), I always encourage my writers to have a target artist in mind when they write, then a rough 'sound' will appear in your head immediately. Remember song writers, you are writing for the ARTIST/SINGER and the general public, not for yourself. But again, the song needs to have your own SOUND.
eg, the songs that Khalil or Jun Kung writes for others are quite different to the ones for himself, yet, you can hear their SOUND
(If u wanna be a good song writer ) There is no point writing a song that only YOU can sing. or be a singer-songwriter
You think you have good song writing skills?
