I had the opportunity last week to be in fellow Shanghai Director Shu Haolun's production of a feature film called "Black & White Photo" produced by Shanghai-based Les Petities Lumieres. It is ithe story of a teen growing up in the poor neighborhoods of Shanghai's old city in the early 1990s and Lanmi the girl he loved as their paths diverge. Lanmi decends into dancehalls and doing anything for money with the new wealthy foreigners while the lead character gets the opportunity to go study in USA.I had the role of being the wealthy foreigner kissing the lovely Lanmi )played by the truly lovely actress Zhai xufei (and pictured below with American Actor Paul Cascante.) I wasa supposed to give her this long and hot passionate kiss as she left my car and the main character was waiting in the alley with his camera for Lanmi and captured this moment in a B&W photo. (I guess this is the pivotal photo of the title)Miss Zhai is a shy young woman, so it was a bit uncomfortable in the rehearsals, but did quite well once "action" was called. This other scene pictured above was in a dance hall. Oddly enough we had to wait for people to leave the dancehall which had not been redecorated since the 90s so in China it means gaudy USA 1970's style decor and the people dancing to almost polka -style music looked like they had been the ones here in the early 90s. I reprised the role of romancing Lanmi and took her back to my hotel room (sorry Paul !) :-) only after dancing and romancing with the lovely extra actress, "Helen" from Xi'an.Hmmmm............ the last time I was down at HENGDIAN movie studios near Yiwu, Zhejiang CHina, my role in a TV show was to romance and kiss a girl.... I am concenred about getting typecast in that role... but not terribly worried if those roles keep appearing. :-)
