Indie filmmaker Vincent Chui ( Fear of Intimacy, Leaving in Sorrow) hosted a BBQ yesterday on the roof of his Sai Kung flat. It was a wrap party for his upcoming Three Narrow Gates and a welcoming party for filmmaker Kit Hui who's planning her first feature to be shot in Hong Kong. Kit's last short "Missing" with AnD's own Terrence Yin played at Cannes.
Ying E Chi's Kaiu Choy was a fantastic co-host who prepared and BBQed a feast from lamb chops to siumais for all of us that included theater actor Ben, up-and-coming actress Joe Man, and Vincent's young and talented crew. It was definitely an energetic bunch.
Also present was filmmaker Simon Chung who kept trying to eat up before his volleyball match. Simon is a notable independent filmmaker who made the gay-themed debut feature Innocent and will embark on a new feature End of Love which shoots in a couple months.
Missing in action that evening was Ying E Chi's new chairman Lawrence Wong who directed the Berlin favorite Cross Harbour Tunnel. Lawrence will also be shooting his new feature in the next few months.
According to Vincent, there will be close to 10 indie features in production to be completed in 2008. 2008 will indeed be an exciting year for HK independent film!
