GCS 012: "The Rock" by Michael Bay

Alcatraz. Only one man has ever broken out. Now five million lives depend on two men breaking in.

Part 12! And for this one, let's go into one of the best action films ever!

The Rock (1996) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117500/maindetails

A group of U.S. marines, under command of a renegade general, take over Alcatraz and threat San Francisco Bay with biological weapons. A chemical weapons specialist and the only man to have ever escaped from the Rock are the only ones who can prevent chaos.

Academy Awards, USA

1997

•

Nominated, Oscar

Kevin O'Connell, Greg P. Russell, Keith A. Wester

Fun Facts:

  • Quentin Tarantinowas an uncredited screenwriter on this film, along withJonathan HensleighandAaron Sorkin.

  • Sean Connery insisted the producers build a cabin for him on Alcatraz as he didn't want to travel from the mainland to the island every day; he got what he asked for.

  • Stanley Anderson, who is uncredited as the President in this film, also plays the President inArmageddon, anotherMichael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimerfilm, thus connecting the two movies. In both films, there is a scene where he stands in silhouette against a bright window while contemplating a decision that would doom the heroes.

  • Ed Harris, playing Brig. Gen. Hummel here, co-starred with Michael Biehn in The Abyss (although not as a Marine). In that film, it was Biehn's character who was a renegade soldier and Harris' character was attempting to stop him.

  • The trailer shows several shots of Goodspeed firing an M-4 assault rifle. While Goodspeed does acquire an M-4 during the course of the film, he never actually fires it.

And of course the scene I chose is the amazing confrontation between Michael Biehn and Ed Harris! Enjoy!!!!

"The hart of a movie, is the Orchestra" Harry Gregson-Williams It's true, take the same scene and put looney tunes music the effect will be different. This scene demonstrate that not only acting skill is necessary to a movie but that it's actaully a great team work. From cameraman to composition, script writing to custume choice, all people working on a team should be remembered for the moments they create for us.
