Syfy channel in search of Asia’s young filmmaking talent

Regional entertainment television channel, Syfy, is calling on young and emerging filmmakers with its end-of-year short film competition ‘Syfy Shorts’.

The competition, open until 31 December, represents the first time the science-fiction themed channel has offered outside content producers the chance to showcase their work on prime-time television. 

Entrants are asked to submit an original five-minute film, in line with the channel’s science-fiction, paranormal, and fantasy genre roots. They will also need to incorporate the channel’s theme of ‘Imagine greater’ in the plot or dialogue.

Entries will be judged early next year, by a panel of industry personalities including Singapore filmmaker Eric Khoo, managing director of animation studio Infinate Frameworks Mike Wiluan, and Taiwanese director Lin Yu-Hsien.

Vice-president of Southeast Channels for Syfy parent NBC Universal, David Gunson, said selected entries would be aired across Asia. “Syfy is a brand that likes to step out of the everyday into new worlds, new ideas and new experiences. Our viewers are of the same mind – curious and unafraid to imagine greater.”
