 Great stories start with imagination

The enthusiasm surrounding the Creative Video Awards seminar was palpable. As the 540-strong crowd swarmed into the Mandarin Orchard Grand Ballroom 15 minutes before it was slated to begin at 2pm, many rushed to take up the best seats at the front of the house.

“This is the first event I’ve hosted where I didn’t have to ask the audience to move to the front seats, so thank you,” quipped the MC. 

The event, organised by the Singapore Media Academy (SMA) and sponsored by Canon, was titled “Telling Great Stories With Your Camcorder”. And it introduced budding filmmakers to the skills needed to shoot captivating films with digital camcorders.

The first half of the seminar was hosted by Mr. Jeremy Humpries, an award-winning, BBC-trained director of photography. After explaining what inspired him to start shooting films, he dove right into the technical aspects of filming. His talk covered topics such as camera handling techniques, working with light, and audio recording.

But if Mr. Humpries’ talk covered technique, the second half of the seminar was all about the heart and soul of filmmaking. Canon had invited renowned local filmmaker Royston Tan as a guest speaker to share stories about his journey as a filmmaker in Singapore. The audience was shown trailers and clips from his projects, including his short film Fish Love.
