By - I believe - the house of Dior? Could also have been Yves Saint Laurent. I can't remember. In any case, this dress has Chinese writing on it, taken from a letter that the designer found just so lovely as a pattern, so it became a high fashion dress. The funny thing is, it talks about someone having a stomach ache. I found that hilarious. The exhibit at the MET tonight, called "China Through the Looking Glass," addressed issues of orientalism, romanticized stereotypes of the east, and cultural appropriation. Funnily enough, those were our main complaints of some ignorant celebrities strutting the red carpet opening of the exhibit back in May, as well as the incomplete coverage of the press. I must say, it was a very painfully gorgeous exhibit. I felt myself easily falling into the trap of falling in love with the romantic and vibrant images that people associate with China, and I had to pinch myself a few times and remind myself "THIS is pretty, but it's part of the problem!" #chinathroughthelookingglass #met #metropolitanmuseumofart #chinesefashion #race #orientalism #stereotypes
