My name is Montague Paul Fendt, I was born in Basel, Switzerland in 1983 and am currently living in Beijing, China.
I am a freelancer, working in fine arts films and photography. As far back as I can remember I could never quiet make up my mind if I wanted to be a director or a cinematographer. Eventually I decided not to think about it anymore. The dramaturgical and technical aspect of filmmaking both intrigues me in equal measure.
I moved to China shortly after the SARS epidemic and have lived here for most of the time since. I studied directing and Sinology in university and am now able to speak, read and write Chinese. However, China still is a completely different world from the one I grew up in. People talk differently, people think differently and the way stories are told is different. Many times my morals, reasons and ideas are torn in between these two worlds, but it is exactly this path in between that interests me and forces me to grow, trying to combine two ways of life and make something new out of it.
My inspiration and passion lies in many kinds of movies, genres and many other arts, but what I find myself especially interested in is the style one could call film noir. I am fascinated by stories about dystopian societies, anti-heroes and unknown places. Especially strong character based stories of people struggling with themselves and the world around them. Stories like these inspire me because I know that everyone struggles with something, facing personal challenges and trying to overcome them throughout life. It is how we act in these moments that defines who we are.
