We have been gathering steam and the opening weekend is upon us (if you didn't get the updated email last week, we pushed the release by one week to avoid decimation by Beowulf last weekend -- also, it gave me time to figure out how to use this email newsletter program). Just as in the U.S., the opening weekend box office in Korea is crucial to the life of a film. This is both an exciting and nerve-wracking time for me. The film was made as a love letter to Korea and right now we are waiting to see if it gets returned to sender. I am fresh off a whirlwind trip to Seoul where I was doing press and promotion. We had an awesome Q&A after our sold out preview screening for general audiences.And from the looks of things, it seems like Koreans will dig this movie.The blogs, the reviews, the interviews... it is all leading towards us finding our audience out there. What I am feeling most optimistic about though is that the Kyoppo (second generation Korean American) network might actually make a difference in the opening weekend in Korea. Last week when I sent out the email to click on the movie info at Naver.com, the film went from being ranked 2000+ in popularity to 20 overnight! This could be a monumental achievement unheard of before -- the Asian American community affecting the Korean domestic box office simply by an email campaign. When I came to Los Angeles to pursue acting 10 years ago, it felt like I was one of very few Korean American guys in town.  In the years since, the situation has changed dramatically – I would never have guessed then that there would be so many prominent Korean American actors working today.  And it’s been so exciting to see that growth paralleled by the growth of Korean cinema in the global market.

 

I began to wonder what it would be like if resources and talent flowed both ways, from the United States to Korea and back?   One of the first answers to that question is a Michael Kang movie I acted in called West 32nd.  It’s set in New York’s Koreatown; it’s often bi-lingual; it stars Korean American and Korean actors; and it was financed by CJ Entertainment, a Korean company that took a chance on this uniquely entertaining thriller. 

 

On a personal note, the experience of making this film is among the most gratifying of my life.  My character’s discovery of his own culture mirrored my own experience with a largely Korean American cast and crew. It was a special time for me.

 

But the opportunity to give birth to a new category of film – the Korean/American co-production – is also special.  In success, I hope this film is a catalyst for stories, talent, and resources to be shared between Koreans and Korean Americans.  It would be a shame for us to drop the ball on this now.

감독이 말하는 <웨스트 32번가>

마이클 강 (Michael Kang)

1989년 뉴욕시로 이사온 이후, 저는 줄 곳 한인 교포 사회 그리고 그 안에서의 저의 정체성에 대해 많은 생각을 했었습니다. 뉴잉글랜드 근교에서 학창시절을 보냈었기 때문에 제가 교포사회와 접촉할 수 있는 기회란 교회 또는 몇 안 되는 부모님의 한국친구분들을 통해서였습니다. 뉴욕이라는 곳은 매우 큰 교민사회가 형성되어 있었고 저는 이에 매우 매료되었지만 동시에 소외감을느꼈습니다. <웨스트 32번가>는 이러한 저와 한국사회에 관계를 심층적으로 탐구해 보려는 제 노력이라고도 할 수있겠습니다.

이번 영화에 대한 영감을 처음으로 얻은 계기는 아시아계 미국인 청소년들을 돕는 비영리단체에서 일하던 제 친구의 실제 담당 사건에대해 들은 후였습니다. 뉴욕에서 일어난 살인 사건에 한 어린 소년이 용의자로 몰려 허위자백을 하도록 강요된 사건 이였습니다.현재 동료 작가이자 그 당시 Village Voice 기자였던 에드먼드 리(Edmund Lee)를 바로 이즘에 처음 만나게됐습니다. 에드먼드는 한국교포 갱단에 대한 기사를 준비 중 이였습니다. 서로 대화를 나누다 보니 두 이야기가 잘 들어맞는다는생각이 들었습니다.

저는 범죄 드라마를 늘 좋아했습니다. 하지만 이번 작품을 하면서 가장 큰 과제라고 할 만한 부분은 바로 범죄 드라마를 다루면서도훌륭한 이야기에서 빠지지 않는 주요 요소들을 유지하는 것 이였습니다. 무엇보다도 이번 영화는 범죄극이지만 드라마의 핵심은 이장르를 독특하면서도 개인적인 관점에서 표현하는 것 이였습니다.

교포사회에서 소외감을 느꼈던 제 경험을 바탕으로 백인 주류사회에서 절실히 인정받고자 하는 한국2세 변호사인 존 킴(JohnKim)이라는 인물을 창조했습니다. 존의 야망은 점차 그를 한국 교포 조폭의 암흑세계로 인도한다. 새롭게 접한 이 세계에 문외한존이지만, 동시에 자신의 의지와 상관없이 한국 문화에 연결되어 있고, 여기서 존은 정체성을 찾아 방황하게 됩니다.

존의 상대역인 마이크 전(Mike Juhn)은 조폭 세계에서 자신의 위치를 확고히 하려는 야망 찬 중간급 보스입니다. 한국 문화에는 익숙하지만, 자신이 속한 사회에서 자신의 위치와 정체를 정립하지 못한 채 방황합니다.

이 두 인물은 둘의 관계가 깊어져 가면서 서로에게 더 의존하게 됩니다. 때론 협조하며 함께 일을 하려 하지만, 결국 난국을 맞게됩니다. 이런 상황은 교포 2세와 1.5세간의 세대 차라는 심오한 문제, 더 나아가 한국 문화 전체를 비유한 것입니다.
