Born in Shanghai, Masson began modelling in her home city. Fluent in English, Mandarin and her native Shanghainese and with a natural affinity for high fashion she became a favourite among the country's top photographers and established herself as one of China's premier models. Her classical Chinese beauty soon captured the attention of the international market and she became one of the first Chinese models to feature in Italian Vogue with a 16-page editorial shot by world-renowned French-American photographer Stephane Sednaoui. The Vogue spread catapulted Masson into the world of high fashion and her international career took off with offers from around the world. Deciding to live and work extensively in New York and Paris, she traveled the globe working on a variety of fashion and commercial projects.​
