I was supposed to be in Washington, DC by this time today. The purpose of the trip was to see the First Emperor's Terracotta Army at the National Geographic Museum. We were all ready to go. Then I noticed the weather forecast yesterday morning--imminent winter weather for North Carolina, Virginia and the greater DC area. To get to DC from here, you have to drive across the entire state of Virginia.
Yesterday morning, the projected snow totals were 6-8 inches for DC. Not good news, but manageable. Last night the projected total jumped to 12 inches. This morning they were forecasting 18 inches. Right now, the projected total has jumped to 24 inches and they expect the snow to begin tonight and continue through sometime Sunday without stopping. Did I mention the winds of 35 MPH (which could cause whiteout conditions)?
We pulled the plug on the trip at 8 a.m. this morning, ate the cost of the admission to the museum and bought tickets for a date in March (risky, I know, they can still have ice and snow storms at that time of the year, but this weekend is a sure thing and it sure is going to be bad!), then we transferred our hotel reservations. Now I can even attend the office Christmas luncheon on Monday (when before I would have been driving back from the trip we didn't take).
At least I played hooky from work and had a nice, leisurely breakfast with hubby this morning and read and napped off and on all day. We have had some snow flurries this afternoon, but only enough to make us hope for some real snow overnight.
