I've seen a lot of music videos in my day. MTV premiered in the US when I was in my 20s and it was something of a novelty, so we were all watching to try and figure out what a music video was and, more importantly, what it could be. In the 80s the budgets were minuscule by today's standards, but creativity and an iconoclastic attitude about the medium led to a handful of (at least at the time) intriguing offerings.
It seems that things were different in Hong Kong. Even a star as big as Leslie Cheung starred in his fair share of awful to truly horrendous videos in the 1980s. (I think I can say this because I really love Leslie Cheung.) The following is an example of absolutely the worst music video I have ever seen. It is so bad that I laugh hysterically every time I see it. If there is a lesson to be learned from this stinker I think it has to be: never, ever let a bad director rent a cherry picker for a video shoot. I can just hear the director saying: "Get Leslie up in the cherry picker and we'll shoot some more footage. We don't have to return the cherry picker for another hour, so why waste the opportunity to feature it in a few more shots." The director most definitely should have resisted the urge. Keep watching until the end--you'll see exactly what I mean.
