Alibaba

do you guys know the E-commerce site called Alibaba?

I MC-ed for the Nikkei Business Innovation Forum yesterday and had the honor to meet Mr.Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba.

It was a very interesting forum which strongly encouraged Jap small and medium-sized enterprises to shift towards E-commerce import/export to and from China.

My mom owns a drugstore here which isn't doing that well and I'm thinking, in this digital era it's kinda non-sense to own a store physically unless the business is extremely good.

what are your thoughts?

i've always thought there are huge business potentials for importing into japan... because of the relatively non-competitive markets, there's a lot of opportunity to be had in bringing in outside products... (i learned this after traveling back and forth between japan and china a few times and saw identical items selling for 4-10x the price in China...) but no matter what there will still be a place for stores... they may need to specialize or increase volume to stay competitive though...
