Positivity XVI

This is a wonderful true story that I would really like to share with you because it lifted my spirits and I hope it does the same for you.

There was once a sophomore from Columbia University called Sandy Greenberg who had an eye disease called glaucoma. Unfortunately it wasn't detected early enough to prevent him from becoming legally blind, so the really sad thing was that this young man lost his ability to see after being able to see everything until that tender age.

This was not a simple situation in reality. Because in a school like Columbia, it would be really difficult if you were in a batch with several other competitive kids. But Sandy had a roommate who read the textbooks to him out loud every night and as a result, Sandy passed and graduated with honors. He even qualified for a scholarship to continue at Oxford. Now Sandy was poor, but because of his thrifty ways, he saved about five hundred dollars at that point.

One day he received a call from his former roommate who groused about his unhappiness being in graduate school. He said it wasn't what he really wanted to do. Sandy was curious and asked him what it was was he really wanted.

"Sandy I really love to sing! I have a high school friend who plays the guitar. And we would really like to try our hand in the music business."

But they didn't have enough money to make a promo record which would cost about five hundred dollars. So Sandy thought about it and took out his entire life savings and lent the money to that ex roommate because Sandy felt his roommate had "made my life" so he wanted to "make his life".

Later, the five hundred dollars helped them cut a record which became known as " The Sounds of Silence".

Sandy's roommate was a fellow called Art Garfunkel. His friend was Paul Simon.

Years later it was Art Garfunkel who sang while Sandy walked his daughter down the aisle when she got married.

Sometimes it's incredible how certain people are willing to give that extra inch, go that extra mile just to help. I think there are so many positive aspects of being a blessing to others. It's not an issue with just money, but the meaning and support behind that helping hand. I remember those people who went out of the way to help me, who retrieved me from my embarrassed and timid disposition for that extra pat on the back. Yes, it's a wonderful feeling to feel blessed and thank God for giving me the ability to bless somebody back from time to time. :)

Even if you feel down or are facing something tough in your life, say something good to yourself. You have to be your own friend and later you can help somebody who needs it.
