One fine Sunny day, good friend A asked me to take her little daughter out for the day because she said she had an immediate appointment and her husband was away on a business trip. She also said,I was possibly the last person she should ask,but little Beverly had been asking about me.So.
A: Okie Lyddy darling, take care of my baby. She'll be a good kid, unless she starts feeling sleepy, or she should be fine. Here is her colouring book, some teddy grahams cookies and her milk.
I was watching these in bemused wonder.
"Dude,I'm just taking care of the daughter for the day as a friend yo,not some outlandish babysitter. Or so" I thought. "There's even milk???????? Maybe I'll steal the teddy grahams!" thinks me.
Beverly: Hello Lydia jiejie
Me: I grinned. OOH.
A: Yeah, I told her to call the eccentric Aunty Lydia jiejie, or else you'd go bonkers. Hahaha, I'm glad my girl is such an obedient kid.
Me: Wonderful! A politician in the making!

Beverly and I spent the rest of the day doing little things other 13 yr olds didn't quite usually do with their 20-something year old friends of their mummies.
I'm not the sort that does cutsy stuff by taking kids to the zoo,mc donald's or something like that.In fact I decided to treat Bev as a little grown up by "hanging out" with her.
Me: honey, tell me when u do get bored ok?we're going to go to my house and hang out before going out. it's too sunny to do anything without melting.
Bev: Ok! gleefully
Bev: Lydia jiejie, why do u like white?
Me: Honey,that's clever.How did u know I like white?
Bev: Because u're always wearing a white cap, or white dresses or white t shirts. Then I saw u wearing a white skirt in your photograph also.
Me: Ha! Yeah, I'm uh...I don't know. I like wearing white, but I like other bright colours like pink and yellow too.
Bev: Mummy likes blue.
Me: And u honey?
Bev: I like what u like.
I smiled. How sweet.
Me: Let me guess u like pink???
Bev nods.
We went to my place and I made a simple lunch for the sweetheart. I made her some basmati rice with banana curry and some chicken and a side vegetable salad with baby spinach and crunchy almonds and pinenuts and some light cheese drizzled with some vinagerette. Later I served her some jell-o homemade with lychee and mango inside. She loved it.
We spent time listening to music and I asked Bev while I did the dishes if she liked playing the piano. I knew she was taking lessons. After the dishes were done,I danced right up to her and planted myself onto the piano seat. I started playing Mary had a little lamb and Bev smiled and clapped. Then I did Mary had a little lamb, jazz. She laughed and laughed even harder when I did it rock and then I imitated Bon Jovi or Axl Rose and tried the deep throaty cool rocker voice. Bev was screaming in excitment, she was having so much fun we were a ruckus.
Me: Bev,let's make some sandwiches and take them out! We could go to the park and play charades and then u can do your colouring!
Bev: YAY!!!
Me: Let's make ham and cheese sandwiches, and that teriyaki chicken I made the last time u came?
Bev clapped on ecstasy.
While walking out,I told Bev about how many homeless people there were on the streets and that they needed money for food. Bev nodded and said nothing. I asked Bev what would happen if one day Lydia jiejie was on the streets and she looked at me in such a sad way that I tossed my head and laughed!
Me: Joke, just a joke Bev! I am fine!!!!
Bev: I know. I just think it's sad.
Me: It is. So we must always not put our interests as first. Honey, now that you see others having to struggle, would u finish your food next time as a good girl should? Would u throw toys away after playing with them for 2 days?
Bev: No. I will treasure them quietly
Me: Let's play a game, rock scissors paper stone.Winner gets an ice cream!!!!
I won.
I bought Bev an ice cream anyway and we gave half our sandwiches away to some of the other kids at the park. I wrote my lyrics and new songs for the new animation film project I was composing for. Bev played "catch" with the kids and they started giggling.
I brought Bev to a music equipment store and there I showed her the differences between a piano,a weighted piano and a keyboard. She was fascinated. I showed her how she could use guitar sounds, drums, and a whole orchestra from a synthesizer and I asked her
Me: Bev, basically I showed u alot of music stuff today. Are u bored?
Bev: Nope. I love it shyly
Me: Aww that's great. I always knew u had an inclination towards music U know. The very first time I met u,u said u liked Somewhere Out There, I knew it.
Bev grins.
Me: Bev, what is your ambition?
Bev cocks her head away in shy amusement.
Me: Bev? Do u want to be a doctor? A lawyer? Or?
Bev shook her head.
Me: Let me guess! Our little darling is so pretty, she wants to be uh Hannah Montana!!!!
Bev squealed and said no excitedly.
Bev: I wanna be YOU!
Me: WHAAAAT!!!!!!!!
Bev: YOU,.YOU,YOU drawls Heeeeee!!!!
Just at this timely moment her mummy calls.
Me to Bev's mum on the phone: Houston! We have a problem!!!!
PS : Yes,it's true.13 yr old Bev drinks a packet of daisy's milk and her colouring book is for artclass. HAHAHAH i realize i made her sound like she was 3!
Be inspired and inspire.
