King Cobra Soup

I really love Mongkok and I'm always looking for an excuse to head out there. Recently I've made some good friends who are always up for new experiences so we went out to Apliu Street in Sham Shui Po to see what needs to be seen. We bought this groovy vintage radio for 20 HKD!!

The glasses were 10 hkd each!

Last time I was in Mongkok, I remembered  there was this fascinating hole-in-the-wall which serves snake soup. It's old, dingy, with florescent lighting and I always wanted to go in to see what it was all about. My partners in crime wanted to try the haute cuisine- so in the spirit of adventure, we ventured in to eat what needed to be eaten.

The 5 snake soup kind of tasted like chicken (as all mystery meats do) and what better way to wash it down than with some nice rice wine shots marinated with snakes gall bladder.

The owners of the snake soup place were very amicable and quite proud of their business. It amuses them when non-Chinese people come in to try their delicacy- So they said we could play with the snakes if we wanted. Out of these ancient wooden drawers, they pulled out  this 6 foot long King cobra with it's mouth taped shut and the only one with enough courage to handle the long venomous monster was Ivan.

He had no fear of of playing with the snakes. He said "I just want the snake to know I'm okay with it." The snake was slithering around and was so upset at being handled, his tounge kept hissing out from between the tape. Presumably out of nervousness and helplessness the snake proceeded to take a big dump on Ivan's nice red kicks. It was ironic because eating the snake didn't make us poop, but the rather the snake pooped because of us!
