Go skateboarding day was started by Emerica in order to celebrate skateboarding on 21st June. Don't drive just skateboard. Cruise the street with your skateboard, going spots to spots.
Hong Kong also celebrate this meaningful event and this year is our 3rd that we celebrated Go Skateboarding Day on the 18th June (Saturday) sponsored by VANS. Vans has been doing this since Hong Kong's first Go Skateboarding Day, they always show love to skateboarders and we truly appreciate that.
Of course, 8FIVE2SHOP and HKIT are here to support 110% when it comes to skateboarding. This year, Element and Plan B also give away some decks.
It's all started at Morrison Hill at 1pm, lots of skateboarders show up just to have fun. Vans has this big dices for the beginners to play, roll the dice, do your trick and you'll get Vans tote bag, mouse pad, towel, etc. Very generous. Lots of kids participated.
Then the FUN time begin when FAST RACE on Morrison Hill track begin, each skater has to roll as fast as possible 2 times and ended up with ollieing over 3 decks. Ben Coniam did 28.7 second, Chris Bradley did 26.1 seconds and Piet Guilfoyle did 30 seconds. The final was between these 3 skaters to race as fast as they can all at the same time, it was crazy. At the end, it's Chris Bradley who took the medal.
After Vans hooked us up with burgers, chicken thigh and drinks, we went to Mei Foo Skatepark at 3:30pm. We arrived Mei Foo skatepark at 4pm.
Then the game of S K A T E begin. Final 5 are Lee Hawk, Lung Chai, A Wai, Chun Chai and Ben Coniam. The final was between Chun Chai and A Wai. It was a very close game, leaving them T to T at the end. Chun Chai took the HK1,500 cash from Vans, 3 pairs of Vans shoes, 6 decks (from 8FIVE2SHOP, HKIT and Plan B) with double heelflip. Please note that A Wai's weakness is heelflips.
After that 8FIVE2SHOP started with a new game, which is called 852GAME, inspired by Josh Kalis.
STRAIGHT 8 - Kickflip, Fakie Flip, Heelflip, Fakie Heel, Switch Flip, Nollie Flip, Switch Heel, Fakie Heel. The winner gets HKD500. Johnny Tang (from China) came and tried to pocket the HKD500 but he failed on his last trick; guess which one? It's the heelflip, dayeem.
AMAZING 5 - Tre Flip, Fakie Tre, Switch Tre, Nollie Tre and a Hardflip. Winner gets HKD800
CRAZY 2 - Laser Flip and 360 hard flip. Winner gets HKD1,000
NONE of the skateboarders is able to pocket these cash so 8FIVE2SHOP put up an easier approach;
EASY4 - Flip, Nollie Flip, Heelflip, Nollie Heelflip. Winners get HKD50 plus 2 pairs of Vans. Chun Chai got some, Johnny Tang got some, A Wai got some. I was hoping more cats get on this one.
HARD4 - Tre Flip, Fakie Tre, Switch Tre and Nollie Tre. Chun Chai and Johnny got this one. Another HKD150 plus 2 pairs of shoes.
360FLIPS record goes to A Wai (26 in a row), follow by Chun Chai (22 in a row) and Johnny Tang (16 in the row). A Wai pocket few hundreds and 2 pairs of shoes as well.
It's all about having FUN and these games are THE MOST FUN! WE are going to continue this next year. Better get your flips on.
Then the HIGHEST OLLIE CONTEST. Last 2 years the defending champion, Mr Chris Bradley ollied over 36". This year Henry took the crown with 35", I hope really hoping Chris or someone else breaks the 36" record. Hopefully next year, someone steps it up to 37" or more.
After few pizza, few drinks and tons of fun, the 2011 Vans Hong Kong Go Skateboarding Day is over. Time flies when you are having fun.
Once again, thank you VANS for the support, we will always remember. Thank you to 8FIVE2SHOP and HKIT for always being there. Thank you to all the judges Warren Stuart, Andy Lee, Kit (HKIT) and ProB (8FIVE2SHOP), you guys are the best. Also thanks to Lee Hawk (Element/PlanB) and Coke Zero, we love Coke Zero.
See you all again next year.
Now grab your board and go skateboard!
