  UNICEF Hong Kong Committee Ambassador Karen Mok (Karen), Daniel Chan (Dong Dong), as well as special guest Astrid Chan (Zhijing), earlier went to the remote mountain district Meigu in Liangshan Prefecture in Sichuan Province--discovering a district waiting for the world's loving care. Although Karen Mok, Daniel Chan and Astrid Chan together with UNICEF have gone to many local poverty-stricken districts numerous times in the past, but this is the first time the three people have stepped foot into Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Seeing the local impoverished conditions and the tough situation of life of the women and children, they couldn't not feel touched to tears.   Liangshan is situated in the south-west part of Sichuan Province, close to 30% of the rural population are living below the poverty line. Many poor families due to living in high altitude mountain areas where transport is inconvenient, and under the influence of traditional cultural practices, lack an awareness of hospital delivery, in addition there are few local quality health workers, inadequate standards of health facilities, resulting in the local maternal mortality and death rate of children below 5 years old being higher than the national average; however, the rate of hospital delivery is lower than half of the national average. During this week's visit, they interviewed many whom maybe because of giving birth at home, do not have enough hygiene awareness, are malnourished, are poverty-stricken thus causing death of the mother or a newborn baby with a deformity. Every time hearing the local women and elders talking about their tragic experiences, the three of them always feel a twinge in the nose, and consequently their face will be covered in tears. During the trip, Karen and Zhijing even taught the young mothers in the countryside aspects of proper health knowledge during pregnancy and taking care of babies, while Dong Dong personally taught the children how to properly wash their hands with soap, and to develop good hygiene habits.    This time's Liangshan friendly visit will be made into  UNICEF:  special TV program,  and this Saturday (February 19th) night at 10:30 pm will be simultaneously broadcast on TVB Jade and HD Jade. And in the period of broadcast, 60 donation hotlines will be setup, inviting the public to call 2833-6139 and donate to support UNICEF "China Children's Health Fund", and improve the health of children in Liangshan and the local medical condition.   During this period of visit, Liangshan's weather changed a lot, it seemed like in one day the "summer heat" became the "cold winter", and at any time it would begin to rain torrentially, resulting in a thrilling visit. Karen recalled, "Among one of the poverty-stricken families we visited, located in a small village in the mountains, the team had already departed in the morning, but because it was raining too much, on the way several of our cars "slipped" many times, and everyone had to get out in the rain to push the car...at the time we were even on a very steep mountain road, on the left was the mountain slope, on the right was the cliff, and the road was only the width of an off-road vehicle, if not careful we could even have a cliff fall accident. Fortunately or because we were doing a charitable deed, therefore nothing happened to anyone." Karen said emotionally, "This time during my visit to Liangshan I personally saw the living conditions of families in remote rural areas. In Hong Kong, we don't need to worry about having food to eat, water to drink, transport and health care. Over here, the living environment is very difficult."    Dong Dong was also frank, the impression that this visit to Liangshan has given to him is the most profound and shocking, because many poverty-stricken families live in high altitude mountain areas where transport is inconvenient, the fastest it takes to visit their home is around a two hour walk. There was one time everyone had to "use hands and feet", to climb towards a home. He is convinced that, just by improving the local basic health care services, the children will have the opportunity to cultivate their talents, and have hope to get out of poverty. While as a mother, Zhijing empathised with the misfortunes of the local impoverished mothers, "The resources in Liangshan are really too deficient, there is inadequate medical facilities, the transportation network is not even developed. The mothers here compared to those in the city, only wish for their children to grow up quickly, this is not easy."    The association hopes that through this visit, it can raise Hong Kong people's concern and support for Liangshan women and children. Supporter of UNICEF, "China Children's Health Fund" has a monthly donation program, and locally started two work programs "Maternal and Child Health Care and Child Immunisation Services" and "Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, HIV Treatment and Care for Children ", from increasing Liangshan people's awareness of self care, thereby achieving the goal of lowering maternal and child mortality, to bring about change to their "plight".

  "China Children's Health Fund" monthly donation program was established in 1999, it is a program devoted to carrying out assistance projects for local poverty-stricken areas, and long-term support for child health and development in China's remote areas.

聯合國兒童基金香港委員會大使莫文蔚（Karen）、陳曉東（東東），以及特別嘉賓陳芷菁（芷菁），早前遠赴四川省涼山州美姑縣偏遠山區──發掘一個正等待外界關愛的地區。雖然莫文蔚、陳曉東和陳芷菁都曾多次隨聯合國兒童基金會（UNICEF）前往國內不少貧困地區，但是3人此行均是第一次踏足涼山彝族自治州，看到當地的貧困狀況和婦女兒童艱苦的生活處境，他們無不感觸落淚。

涼山州位於四川省西南部，有近3成農村人口生活在貧困綫下。不少貧困家庭由於生活在交通不便的高海拔山區及傳統文化習俗的影響，他們對於住院分娩的意識都非常薄弱，再加上當地有質素的衞生工作者數量不多，標準衞生設施亦不足，引致當地的孕產婦死亡率及5歲以下兒童死亡率均高於國家平均水準；然而，住院分娩率卻低於國家平均水準的一半。在爲期一週的探訪中，他們走訪了多個或因在家分娩、保健意識不夠、營養不良、貧困等而造成母親死亡或初生嬰兒患有殘疾的家庭，每當聽到當地婦女和老人講述自己的悲慘經歷，3人總是鼻子一酸，繼而淚流滿面。行程中，Karen和芷菁更教導農村裡的年輕母親在懷孕期間和照顧嬰兒方面的正確衞生知識，而東東則親自教授小朋友如何正確便用肥皂洗手，及將之養成良好的衛生習慣。

是次的涼山親善探訪將製作成 聯合國兒童基金會：《涼山的第一綫曙光》特備電視節目， 並於本周六（2月 19日）晚上10:30於無線電視翡翠台及高清翡翠台同步播出。而在播映期間，本會將設置60條捐款熱綫，歡迎市民致電2833-6139捐款支持UNICEF「中國兒童健康基金」，以改善涼山兒童的健康及當地醫療狀況。

探訪期間，涼山的天氣變化非常大，彷彿一晝間由「炎炎的夏天」變為「冰冷的冬天」，並不時下起滂沱大雨，令整個探訪活動既驚且險。Karen憶述，「我們其中一個探訪的貧困家庭，位於山上的一條小村落，大隊早上便已經出發，但因為雨實在太大，我們幾部車在途中都多次『跣胎』，大家都要冒雨落車推車……我們當時身處的還要是一條好陡峭的山路，左邊是山坡，右邊就是山崖，而路面就只有一部越野車般闊，一不小心便可能發生墮崖意外。幸好或者是因為我們是在做善事，所以大家都平安無事。」Karen感慨地說，「今次我在涼山的探訪過程中親眼看到了偏遠農村地區家庭的生活狀況。在香港，我們不愁吃飯、喝水、交通和衞生保健服務。在這裏，生活環境很艱苦。」

東東亦坦言，這次涼山探訪給予他的印象是最深刻和震撼的，由於不少貧困家庭生活在交通不便的高海拔山區，到訪他們的家最快也差不多要走兩小時，更有一次大家要「手腳並用」，以爬山的方法前往一個家庭。他深信，只有改善當地的基本衞生保健服務，孩子才有機會栽培成才，有望脫貧。而身為母親的芷菁對於當地貧困母親的遭遇就更是感同身受，「涼山的資源實在太匱乏、醫療設施不足、交通網絡又不發達，這裡的母親比起城市中的，只是希望自己的孩子快高長大，亦不容易。」

本會希望藉著是次探訪，可提高港人對涼山婦女及兒童的關注和支援，支持UNICEF的「中國兒童健康基金」每月捐款計劃，在當地開展「婦幼衞生保健和兒童計劃免疫服務」 以及「 預防愛滋病病毒母嬰傳播、治療與關懷感染愛滋病兒童」兩項工作計劃，以增強涼山人民的自我保健意識，從而達致降低孕產婦和兒童死亡率的目標，為他們的「苦況」帶來改變。

「中國兒童健康基金」每月捐款計劃在 1999年成立，是一項致力在國內貧困地區開展援助項目，長綫支持中國偏遠地區兒童健康發展的計劃。
