Road Trip Day 6 Cont’d – More San Antonio

On our only full day in San Antonio, we chose to have a pretty chill day visiting, among other things, the Alamo and Trinity University, Jonathan’s Alma Mater. But first, as always, we had a breakfast that should be too big for any human being, but still nevertheless, consumed by a skinny white dude and two small Chinese. And yes if you’re asking that’s bacon, sausage, ham and eggs sandwiched by two amazing pancakes. Also, that is the biggest pancake that I have ever seen gracing Jonathan and Zarifa’s plate. My pancakes were the size of the small one in the middle. If you ever have a chance to visit San Antonio, go for the breakfast at the Olmos Pharmacy, you will not be disappointed.  Lunch also looked excellent there and we had considered coming back for their deep fried mushrooms but we never made it back as we got too full from our other lunch.

One of my few regrets in life is never experiencing American campus life. Having walked through University of Texas and  Trinity University campuses, it has made me even more jealous of the US uni life. Trinity is a beautiful campus built on two levels of landscape and very open.  There are loads of lawns for people to lounge sit and chill in the outdoors and generally lots of cool places to hang.  It’s a relatively small university however it doesn’t feel that way physically.

The rest of the day we spent walking down the San Antonio River Walk towards the famed location of the Alamo. It was a beautiful day full of Sunshine and cool breezes and some wonderful food. If you ever come you really gotta spend a day just walking along the river.  If walking really is not your thing you can grab a small ferry that shuttles you up and down the river for 15 dollars.  That’s US dollars. But I really think if you have working feet and legs, you really should do the walk, you see more.

The Alamo is a beautiful place.  It’s smack in the middle of a small community of shops, offices and a few industrial lofts. You don’t quite expect it but it’s an amazing little place.  To know the history that happened there, the intense battle that took place and the now hallowed ground that it is, was both exciting and humbling.

After the Alamo, we walked back to the car and spent the evening with some friends at the McNay Art Museum.  Though we had very little time for art, it’s a beautiful gallery, it was a very cool place with a wonderful vibe. On every second thursday evening of the month, they open their lawn and set up food trucks and a band to entertains kids and adults alike.  Free beer is passed out and the food trucks are amazing.   Check out McNay’s Second Thursday, the food is solid and most of the museum is free to explore.
