Having left Carlsbad, I looked forward to my next location. Austin, Texas. For the better part of the last five days, I had not spent more than 12 hours in one place. Always travelling, always moving always driving. Though exciting, I was ready to take a break. Sit down and sleep in the same place for a few days. That place was to be Austin, a location of BBQ, the Southern drawl and a site of a close friend’s wedding.
It is also where I will meet up my best mate and his wife who are also going to said wedding, and spending the week after with me.
Driving through West Texas is as interesting as watching bread toast. It’s exciting but it looks pretty much the same all the way through until the very end.
But it was still wonderful time. Passing through El Paso was quite cool, and just driving by the dessert was such a unique experience. But I was in was going to see one of my good friends get married.
I love Austin. It was such a great and chill place to be. It’s like Texas’ Hawaii. I sincerely wouldn’t mind living there if I didn’t love Hong Kong so much. I think I just expanded my list of favourite cities in the world. It’s a beautiful place full of unique restaurants, and bars and a hot bed of exciting food and entertainment. The people here are so nice and friendly and are always excited to hear your stories and genuinely care about your day when they ask you, ” How are you doing today sir?” I love being called that.
Having my best friend there along made it doubly fun.
Highlights included Zilker park, Torchy’s Tacos, Franklin’s BBQ, Museums, more Mexican food, Waffle House,
I spent five days in Austin and I’d like to say it was not enough. I will definitely be back. It was a beautiful city, with very few tall buildings which was a very welcome change from the concrete jungle of Hong Kong and San Francisco. Even though i did spend some time downtown “business district” of Austin, I was pleasantly surprised by the copious amounts sunlight readily available and a lack of shade. I had often times questioned my friends if people were taking a holiday because no one seemed to be on the street during office hours. I was swiftly told that it was just Austin, it’s not that crowded. It was intriguing and refreshing and definitely a city worth exploring.
However no sooner had I arrived, I was heading to another place. At least I had company with me this time.
Talk soon,
Jonathan
