This past Sunday at the Grand Cinema, I watched a screening of "Roomless" an independent feature film by Kingman Choi, starring Tiny Gary and Gloria Poon, with Leslie Ho and a cameo by Jayson Li.
A funny and quirky flic about a jobless, University grad slacker who is living off the Hong Kong government and looking for ways to scam a little more money any chance he gets. The slacker gets a little extra cash and decides to pay visit to a prostitute, who has a knack for alternate methods of sexual stimulation. When the slacker messes up her apartment, he agrees to let the prostitute stay in his apartment. Both scheming to get the better end of the deal.

Tiny and Gloria have great chemistry as an odd couple paired together under unusual circumstances that I can only describe as "shit happens... literally." hahaha. Leslie adds some quirky comedic moments as a psychopathic client and one of the most "OMFG, they put this into a comedic film" scenes I've seen in a long, long time.
The film itself feels a lot like a play, much of it taking place in a 100sq foot apartment. Making it the epitome of how to do an ultra low budget indie feature. Shot beautifully on a DSLR at a production budget of around $20,000HKD.
At different times, funny, sweet, quirky, sexy, disturbing, dark, light, it really runs the gambit of emotions and even throws in a bit of a genre change towards the end where it shifts from quirky romantic sex comedy to suspense caper. Overall, I wish more flics like this would be made here in HK.

Review: Definitely not your ordinary romantic comedy (which is a very very good time in my opinion). But for that reason, I can tell you that this flic won't be for everyone, but I think if you're looking for a romantic comedy with twisted humor, an indie feel, and less holds barred than most flics being shot and shown in Hong Kong, I definitely recommend checking this one out.
It's still has two more showings at the Grand Cinema (Oct 22 & Oct 30) so go check it out!
