Always fun to see friends of mine in cool projects. Recently watched the Hong Kong movie with friends Anita Chui and Aaron Chow in the cast. Good to see J.Arie in it as well; I worked with her on a short film several years ago. It was an interesting viewing experience. Extremely local Hong Kong, but definitely wears the Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith influence on it's sleeve. It's hard not to think the director, Fire Lee, basically wanted to experiment with remaking "Clerks" in a Tarantino-esque style. Having come up from the generation of indie filmmakers that at one point wanted to do nothing but Tarantino style films on a "Clerks" or "El Mariachi" budget, I'm surprised that I haven't seen someone try to do this before. In either case, while it's not the perfect movie and suffers from a lot of same style-over-substance issues that a lot of Tarantino clones run across (believe me, I've been guilty of the same), I did find it an interesting and enjoyable viewing. I do hope Fire Lee continues making films and maturing more with each until he can develop his own distinctive style. Also, big congrats to my friends on their performances, as well as to the rest of the cast that turned in exactly the balance of campiness and dry humor that the movie needed.
