Guy asked me to play some songs for him to hear me out. Played Over the rainbow, Autumn Leaves and One Note Samba . His words "Very good"; "You sound great"...
Then i was thinking, mm...i wanna hear him play obviously. So i asked him to play Giant Steps (highly difficult song to improvise due to its constant and fast chord changes), he played at a slower tempo than i expected, but when come to improv, he did not disappoint; saw him use a series of same patterns of improv on the RH, one small part seems to be a bit repetitive, but overall it sounded very nice. So i told him i'd want to learn this song (improv from him).
Then the lesson didnt go in a very structure manner as i wanted, rather it was like him asking what i wanna learn. He then brought the jazz lead sheets and asked wat song i wanna play, so i chose All the things that you are. He played 2 styles, 1st was ballade style, 2nd was bossanova..i wanted to learn his 1st one since 2nd one i more or less can play. Becoz the 1st one contained many elements i wanted to learn from him, i told him.
So he taught me all the jazz chords, which i had to write down note for note for some, or in some short form i hope i can remember and understand after awhile hehe. And was practising just now. Though i have some doubts about some bars which i think can be improved.
Think next i wanna learn how to comp this song to make it more swingy, if not ballade all the way will be boring; though ballade alone, the chords are already pretty much to swallow in one go. But i think i can show him next week wat he taught me already due to my practice just now. Hope i can remember after a week, and have time to practice on top of my teaching schedule...
Think i should list down what i want to learn:
1) RH improv scales
2) LH comping
3) Nice chords
For songs to work/improve on: Giant Steps, Autumn Leaves, Girl from Ipanema, Donna Lee, Lullaby of a Birdland...will add on the list.
Oh yeah guess wat? After the lesson the admin staff called me and told me the teacher wants to charge me higher as he thinks i shouldnt be beginners' level but higher :( Boooo to already very expensive fees...
