So you lose your Passport...

So you're traveling, having a great time and someone steals your passport or you just lose it.  No problem right, WRONG!  These days with all the security you might want to be prepared in case you are stuck in a different country and you can't leave or reenter your own country.

Some suggestions for the "just in case" situation.

  1. Make a number of copies of your passport.  Leave one at home with a dependable friend.  You know someone who will actually fax it to you and not use it as a coaster!

  2. If traveling with a friend, give him/her one of your copies of your passport and you keep one of his or hers.

  3. If a hotel asks for your passport  see if you can get them to take a copy.  If you already have a copy available you might be able to get them to do so.

  4. If you really want to be ready for anything, take two passport photos with you just in case you have to have a new one prepared for you by your country's embassy.  It will make it happen faster.

5.  If you want to go farther, memorize your passport number.  Again it will make things go faster if you have to replace it.

  1. And of course you know it is better if you keep your passport on your person instead of in your briefcase, suitcase or purse.

I hope you will never need to make use of these suggestions but if you do I hope it helps you get home faster and safely.

Happy traveling!

Another one is to email yourself a scanned copy of your passport to a web-accessible email account. Worse comes to worse, you can go to an internet cafe and print off a copy of it.

narom posted on Friday, May 2, 2008 1:06PM I thought of another one .. but if you're really stuck and don't have a scanner or any way to copy your passport, you can take a picture of it with your phone or digital camera so at least you have SOME sort of record. There is a chance you could lose your phone and camera and someone could find your passport info, but if you have no other choices, i guess a little risk is better than not having any copy at all. then you could go to a photomat type place and print out a copy of the digital photo so you have a copy of it that way too. Maybe keep a laminated copy in your wallet?
