Two weeks after the launch of The Cat that Eats Diodes in Shanghai, Hong Kong for the opening of island6 HK’s second show. Sponsored by the good folks over at Abbelio Wines, an extension of our animal-themed show made its way to No. 1 New Street, Sheung Wan with a zoo-like cacophony.
The Cat that Eats Diodes celebrates the art collective’s six-year love affair with all that resonate with electricity and life. From animated goldfish to lasercut trees, the story of our world is retold in Technicolour glory through LED, video, photography and contemporary sculpture. Re-appropriating iconic scenes from Shanghai and Hong Kong, Liu Dao brings together the essence of two metropolises that are impelled by technology, but inspired by life.
Half of the island6 team (the more muscled half) flew into Hong Kong a few days before the opening to set up the show, leaving the ladies at home to tend to the hearth. More than 200 kg of new artwork were specially flown in for the show, and were hefted into place by three men, one new mother and one 2-month-old baby. The older artworks got a new lease of life as well by being shuffled into new positions.
By the time the show at opened at 5pm, the team was heaving and covered in sweat and grime. Luckily, the Prima Alta Pinot Grigio, Sevenhill Inigo Shiraz, Cab Sav provided by Abbelio, as well as the bathroom facilities at the back of the gallery, brought everyone back to life. We were pleasantly surprised when a few familiar, much-missed faces popped up, and equally happy to make new friends. It turned out to be quite an interesting mix of guests from Shanghainese collectors to French chocolatiers; Hong Kong’s international community was well represented.
